September: the best season for grass seeding

September is the ideal time to sow lawn. This may seem counterintuitive - you might think of spring - but autumn is actually much better. In September, grass roots grow faster than in full summer or full spring. Temperature drops slowly (still warm enough, but no longer 30 degrees), rain falls more regularly, and you have less drought stress.

Moreover: grass you sow in September has the entire autumn and winter to expand roots. With strong roots by April, grass grows fantastically when spring arrives. A "September lawn" is therefore much stronger and greener next summer than grass sown in April-May.

Why September is better than spring?

Temperature: In September the temperature slowly drops from 25 to 18 degrees. This is ideal for grass. Grass prefers temperatures around 15-20 degrees to expand roots. In May-June it is often already 20-25 degrees, causing grass to put more energy into leaf than roots.

Moisture: September and October have more rain and lower evaporation. This means your seed bed naturally stays moister, without you needing to spray every day.

Weeds: Summer weeds (dandelions, clover) grow much less in autumn. So your new grass plants have less competition.

Growth cycle: Grass sown in September can grow until March. Grass sown in May-June stops growing precisely when summer arrives and expends much energy on heat stress.

Preparation: steps 1-3

Preparation is crucial. Well-prepared ground seeds much better than half-hearted work.

Step 1: Mow and clean If you have existing lawn (and want to renovate), mow it short (1-2 cm). Remove all dead grass thatch with a dethatcher or hand-raking. This work looks heavy, but it is essential. Dead grass prevents new grass from rooting.

Step 2: Level the terrain Fill low spots with garden soil (not sand alone, it loses moisture). Use a shovel or rake to level ground. Low spots become muddy, high spots dry out.

Step 3: Add nutrition Add grass seed fertilizer or universal fertilizer. Rough guide: 50 grams per square meter. Work well into top 5 cm.

The sowing technique

This determines success or failure.

Timing: Early September is ideal. Mid-September is good. Late September is cautious (risk of frost damage to young seedlings in December-January). Latest October start.

Seed quantity: This is important - many gardeners use too little seed. Normal sowing rate is 30-40 grams per square meter. This ensures dense coverage. Don't skimp on seed, as thin seeding invites weeds later.

Sowing method: For small areas (up to 50 m2) you can sow by hand. Divide seed into two portions and sow twice (first north-south, then east-west). This gives even distribution.

For larger: use a seeding machine (borrow from garden centers, sometimes free). This guarantees even spread.

After sowing: water and coverage After sowing (important!) you must gently spray until top 1-2 cm is well moist. Not waterlogged, but well moist. You must do this daily for 2 weeks, or until sprouts appear (usually 7-10 days).

Many gardeners stop after 1-2 days spraying. Wrong! Young grass sprouts dry quickly.

Optional: cover seed bed with thin layer of bran or horsehair. This helps retain moisture. After sprout it grows in naturally.

Care from sprout to winter

First two weeks: Spray daily, gently (not waterlogged). Water early morning (before 7 AM). This minimizes evaporation.

Week 3-4: Grass now grows 1-2 cm. Reduce spraying to 2-3 times per week, but deeper (deep watering). This encourages deeper rooting.

Week 5+: Grass now 5-7 cm. Stop spraying and let autumn rains do it. If September/October is very dry (rare exception), water extra, but normally September is moist enough.

First mowing: Mow when grass is 7-8 cm high. Set mower to 4-5 cm (not shorter). This helps grass grow stronger. Mow once or twice more in October if it grows, always at 4-5 cm.

Autumn and winter care

October-November: Grass grows well now. Mow every 2-3 weeks, never shorter than 3-4 cm. In November slower (perhaps once) or not at all if growth stops.

December-March: Grass rests. Almost no mowing needed. Only if bird droppings or debris accumulate, gently clean. Do not walk on frozen grass (wounds).

April: Grass becomes active. First mowing of the season. Set mower to 3 cm. This gives grass boost for summer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sow in spring too?

Yes, but less ideal. April-May possible, but grass then has fewer roots in summer. Result: grass suffers more from drought stress July-August.

What if September is very dry?

Rare, but possible. Spray extra. Otherwise seed will not establish well. Better wait until October.

How thick should seed layer be?

Not thick! Seed must contact soil. Too thick seed (more than 1 cm) does not germinate well. Seed must see and feel: soil, not seed mountain.

My grass grows unevenly. Why?

Often: uneven seeding, or ground not leveled properly. Also possible: thatch (dead layers) where grass cannot grow. Better preparation next time.

Can I use herbicide against weeds?

No, not in first two months. Young grass is too fragile. Wait until December, then you can carefully spray. Hand-weeding is better.

Frequently asked questions

How much does grass seeding cost?

Seed: 20-40 euros (100 m2). Fertilizer: 10-20 euros. Preparation: free if yourself, or 200-500 euros if done professionally. Total: 30-550 euros depending on effort.

Can I mix seed myself?

Not ideal. Different seed types separate quickly. Better buy mixed seed (perennial grass mixture, for example).

What is the best grass mixture for September?

"Perennial grass mixture" or "sports grass mixture" are good. For shade: "shade mixture". All seed suppliers have these.

Does weeds come with seed?

Rarely. Good seed is pure. Your weeds probably come from soil (seed bank). Minimize this with preparation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use September lawn in May?

Carefully, yes. Grass is now 6-9 months old, so roots are firm. For football: still cautious until June. For regular walking: yes.

My lawn has bumps after sowing. Normal?

Yes. These are air bubbles escaping soil. They disappear naturally as grass ages. No worry.

Where is it hardest to sow: shade or sun?

Shade. Grass needs light. In heavy shade: use shade mixture and more seed (35-45 grams per m2).
