Why June is first harvest time

April is sowing season in temperate climates. People sow lettuce, radish, spinach, carrot in April. Six to twelve weeks later - that is June. Strawberries set flowers in April, fruit grows May-June, ripens in June. Herbs grown in May grow strong now and ready for first picking.

June is thus natural harvest time: everything you planted or sowed in April/May reaches harvest maturity.

Mistake: many beginners expect vegetables in May. Too early. June is far more realistic.

Lettuce: June full

Lettuce is sown in April (direct or seedlings). In May it grows, in June it stands full. Lettuce grows quite fast: from tiny seed to harvest-ready takes typically 6-8 weeks depending on type and weather. Fastest: iceberg lettuce (60 days). Slowest: heading lettuce (75+ days). Loose-leaf lettuce ready in 5-6 weeks.

June harvest: Check lettuce bed in June. Leaves roughly 15-20 cm long usually means harvest-ready. Squeeze gently: feels firm and full? Ready. Feels limp/weak? Not yet.

Harvest mornings after dew, before heat. Leaves are crisp and full of juice. Pull whole head (for heading lettuce) or pick loose leaves (for cut lettuce). Pop straight into cool (15°C or less). Eat same day or next; lettuce wilts fast after harvest.

Many don't know: harvesting lettuce makes space for regrowth. Pick your loose-leaf lettuce regularly, new leaves grow through October.

Radish: super fast ready

Radish grows incredibly fast: 25-30 days from seed to harvest. Sow radish late April, ready in May. Sow early May, ready in June. Some people sow radish every 2-3 weeks (succession sowing) for continuous harvest.

June harvest: Radish is ready when bulb roughly thumb-diameter (2-3 cm). Feel in soil without digging: large enough? Pull gently. Pale or stuck? Still growing deep. Radish becomes sharp and woody if too large.

Harvest regularly to prevent overgrowing. Eat fresh: same-day tastiest.

Strawberries: the glory of June

Strawberries set flowers in April, fruit grows May-June. First red berries appear late May, full harvest in June. June is thus peak strawberry month.

Strawberries grow on trusses (vertical): first flowers give first fruit (thus first ripe), later flowers give later fruit. First week of June first strawberries red. Second-third week of June the plant stands full of fruit.

June harvest: Strawberries ripen gradually: green -> red. Pick only red berries (green still want ripening). Ripe strawberries red to almost dark-red, feel soft. Pull gently twisting from plant.

Harvest every 1-2 days: berries ripen fast one after another. Not picked equals overripe, rot, bird food.

Eat fresh or make jam. Strawberries keep 3-5 days in cool, then mould.

Many growers miss this: strawberry plants produce better next year if you harvest heavily this year (stimulates energy flow).

Herbs: first pick now

Many herbs (parsley, dill, basil, oregano) grow fast in April-May. In June they are large enough for first picking.

June pick: Parsley, oregano, thyme: pick leaves from outside inward (older on outside, younger in centre). Plant regrows if you pick this way. For fine herbs (dill, basil) pinch top 5 cm shoots.

Pick mornings gently (shoots release without tearing). Use fresh or dry (hang upside-down in shade 1-2 weeks until dry).

Water and feeding during harvest

Many people forget: harvest time demands heavy water and feeding. Lettuce, radish, strawberries, herbs feed fast growth with heavy nutrition. Without feeding equals skinny, small, poor flavour.

June feeding:

  • Compost top-dressing in May helps already
  • Fertiliser (1-2x monthly) or organic feed (bird droppings, seaweed, bone meal)
  • Water 2-3x weekly deep (not daily light)

Poor soil equals poor harvest.

Storage schedule

Lettuce: Cool (5-10°C), plastic bag, 3-5 days.

Radish: Cool (0-5°C), plastic bag, 1-2 weeks.

Strawberries: Cool (2-5°C), NOT covered, 3-5 days (mould fast).

Herbs: Fresh (day of pick), dried (hanging), or frozen (blend in water ice, freeze).

Step-by-step June first harvest

Step 1: Check lettuce bed

Lettuce leaf 15-20 cm? Squeeze gently to feel fullness. Firm and full? Harvest.

Step 2: Check radish rows

Radish bulb larger than thumb? Pull gently. Apparently too small? Wait 1 more week.

Step 3: Pick ripe strawberries

Every day round through strawberries: pick only red berries (green -> red gradually). Twisting pulling.

Step 4: First herbs pick

Parsley, oregano too long? Pinch top 5 cm shoot. Hang dry or use fresh.

Step 5: Chill, eat fast

Lettuce straight to cool, eat today. Radish cool, this week. Strawberries cool WITHOUT covering, this week. Herbs fresh.

Frequently asked questions

Can I harvest radish early if small?

Yes, radish taste better small (20-25 days) than large (40+ days). Small equals soft, sharp. Large equals woody, hot. Harvest regularly small.

My lettuce is bolting in June. Why?

Heat. June gets warm, lettuce "bolts" (flowers) if over 20°C many hours. Sow lettuce April/May carefully (shade helps), or save June for other vegetables. Flowering lettuce is edible but bitter.

Can I harvest strawberries earlier (still pink)?

No. Strawberries do NOT ripen after pick (fruit only, not vegetable). Must be red on plant. Pink strawberries are sour, not sweet. Wait until red.

My lettuce is limp. Disease?

Probably thirst. Lettuce want moist soil (not wet, but not dry). Water deeply early morning. Limpness can also be heat: shade in very hot June.

I want continuous harvest (not all at once).

Sow radish/lettuce every 2-3 weeks (succession sowing). Strawberries harvest daily (naturally continuous). Herbs pick regularly (regrows). This requires heavy prep in March/April.
