Drought-tolerant borders: don't guess, plan

Summers are warming (42°C record 2024). Rainfall unpredictable. Who waters in June-August? Better: plant smart. This guide gives plants surviving 3-4 weeks without water.

Practical drought-tolerant border (3 m × 1.5 m)

Mix:

  1. Structure: Miscanthus (1 × one side), Salvia (3 ×)
  2. Flower: Achillea (4 ×), Coreopsis (4 ×), Gaura (2 ×)
  3. Accent: Santolina (3 ×)
  4. Low: Sedum (6 ×)

Total plants: 23 Water need year one: 2×/week. Year 2+: zero (even in heat)

Soil prep (critical!)

Drought plants don't survive in clay. They need sandy soil.

For dense clay:

  1. Dig border 20 cm deep
  2. Add sawdust (30%)
  3. Add sand (30%)
  4. Add compost (30%)
  5. Add soil conditioner (10%)

This gives good drainage = plants survive.

Frequently asked questions

How much water year-one drought plants?

2×/week (3 litres per plant). This ensures root growth. Year 2: zero water, even in heat. This is why prep is critical — don't spoil them.

Can I drown drought plants in a wet summer?

Yes. Drought plants die faster from too much water than too little. In wet years: water less. They prefer dry.

Do Sedums rot in wet winter?

Yes, sometimes. Ensure good drainage (sand). In wet areas: only well-drained Sedum (S. 'Autumn Joy', not S. spectabile).

Does drought-tolerant border fill out?

Yes, but slower. Year 1: sparse. Year 2: full. Year 3: full as English border. Patience.

Are drought plants boring?

No! Gaura, Coreopsis, Santolina, Cistus are vibrant flowers. Lavender smells. Miscanthus plumes shimmer. Not boring.
