Dahlias: the queens of July to October

Dahlias are not gentle. They bloom explosively, in multitudes, with dozens of flowers at once. Yellow, orange, purple, pink, white, double, single, pompom-form — more variety than almost any garden plant. They bloom from July to first frost, relentlessly. But if you plant them alone, they feel large and lonely.

With the right partners, a dahlia border becomes a statement. Grasses offer rhythm and texture. Accessory plants (fine leaves, complementary colours) give weight and context. This is the summer combo you watch all season.

Combo 1: The classic dahlia mix

Back (150 cm): Dahlia 'Café au Lait' (soft pink-cream, large blooms, July-October) with Miscanthus sinensis 'Strictus' (upright grass, gold-red, 180 cm). Middle (100 cm): Dahlia 'Moonfire' (orange-red bicolour, 100 cm). Front (60 cm): Dahlia 'Pompon' 'Moonlight' (white-pink pompom, 70 cm) with Salvia 'Black and Blue' (deep purple blooms, dark foliage, 60 cm).

Four dahlias, two grasses, one salvia: height variation, colour continuity, texture everywhere.

Combo 2: For full sun warmth

Warm summer colours: Dahlia 'Bora Bora' (orange-yellow, 100 cm), Dahlia 'Plush' 'Apricot' (apricot double, 80 cm), Dahlia 'Winged Fantasy' (purple-red, 90 cm) with Zinnia 'Benary's Giant' (orange-yellow tall, 80 cm), Sedum 'Autumn Fire' (red leaf autumn, bloom August-October) and Panicum virgatum 'Rubrum' (red grass, 120 cm).

Six different bloom partners, no two the same colour, each stacked in height above the other.

Combo 3: Full summer-autumn (July-October)

Timing-overlap:

  • July-August: Dahlia 'Winged Fantasy' (purple, large, early) + Zinnia (yellow-orange)
  • August-September: Dahlia 'Café au Lait' (pink-cream, peak) + Miscanthus (gold-red full growth)
  • September-October: Dahlia 'Pompon Moonlight' (white, late bloomer) + Sedum (red foliage)
  • October: Aster 'Monch' (blue-purple, small) + all dahlias still full

Four months with at least three things blooming simultaneously.

Dahlia varieties

Dahlias are MANY. Pompom-form: large, double, theatrical. Decorative: neat, head full of petals. Single collar: elegance, fine centre, thin petals. Semi-double: modern. Orchid-form: elegant, fine petals.

Large blooms (150+ mm): 'Café au Lait', 'Bora Bora' — statement plants. Medium (100-150 mm): 'Moonfire', 'Winged Fantasy' — full border. Small pompom (50-100 mm): 'Pompon Moonlight' — soft, full screen.

Growth support and staking

Dahlias grow vigorously and can reach 120-180 cm high. In windy garden: support needed. Not as "tree with ropes", but:

  • Stake in pot when you plant (build in support)
  • Loosely tie the main stem in July
  • Grass beside gives wind-shelter

Don't stake everything at once — natural looks better.

Moisture management

Dahlias love moist soil, sometimes wet. In dry summer: watering twice weekly is normal. Adding mulch helps water retention. Poor soil: bad — they want nutrition. Add compost in May, again in August (bloom boost).

Started from tubers in April-May. First month regular watering. After June grow self-sufficiently.

Storing tubers (for next season)

October: after first hard frost (-5°C) the leaves brown. Carefully dig up. Store dried tubers in cool, dry place (5-10°C) until April. Not moist — rot risk. Paper bag with sand better than plastic.

Colour schemes

  • Warm: Orange + Yellow Dahlia + Red Grass — explosive
  • Cool: Pink + Purple Dahlia + Blue Salvia — refined
  • Mixed: All tints + Grey-green grass — natural, relaxed

Frequently asked questions

How much space does a dahlia need?

Small pompom: 30 cm. Medium: 45 cm. Large: 60 cm apart. Too close: disease. Too much wind sensitivity.

Can I grow dahlias from seed?

Yes, but not true to type. Seed gives unexpected colours. Tubers better for known cultivars.

Why doesn't my dahlia bloom?

Usually too much shade. Dahlias want at least six hours full sun. Or: too moist early season (tuber rot). Or: pruning without plan — if you cut all buds, no bloom.

How do I prune for more flowers?

Pinch out the top two leaves, so the plant branches. More stems = more flower buds. Do in June-July. August: stop pruning, encourage all bloom.
