The perfect shade duo
Hosta without blooms is solid leaf, sometimes dull. Astilbe without hosta is fragile, feels lonely. But together? They complete each other. Hosta gives structure and volume, Astilbe brings weightless plumes and delicate texture. It's the best plant partnership for shade — not for the ego, but for the garden.
The two grow in identical conditions: moist, humus-rich soil, half-shade to full shade, they crave the same nutrition. Hosta's big leaves contrast beautifully with Astilbe's feathery plumes. Hosta blooms in July-August (mostly white), Astilbe from May to September. You get blooms almost all season without effort.
Combo 1: The classic mixed border
Back (150 cm): Astilbe 'Bridal Veil' (white, June-July, wispy plumes like a veil). Middle (70 cm): Hosta 'Blue Angel' (grey-green large leaf) with Astilbe 'Fanal' (deep red, May-June, shorter, earlier blooming). Front (40 cm): Hosta 'Halcyon' (dark grey-blue, narrower leaf, elegant).
Why this layout works: height range from 40 to 150 cm, colours from dark-grey to white, bloom times that follow each other. At any visit you always see something flowering.
Combo 2: For small shade corners
Space is limited? Hosta and Astilbe don't need giants. Hosta 'Gold Standard' (yellow leaf with green edge, 50 cm, brightens shade) with Astilbe 'Deutschland' (white-pink, May-June, compact 50 cm). Underneath Soleirolia soleirolii (baby tears, soft green, 5 cm groundcover).
Small yet sophisticated. The yellow Hosta contrasts with red Astilbe, not overdone.
Combo 3: The blooming shade corner (May-September non-stop)
Four layers of timing:
- May: Astilbe 'Fanal' (red, 60 cm)
- June: Astilbe 'Bridal Veil' (white, 120 cm) + Hosta 'Sum and Substance' (large yellow leaf, 80 cm)
- July-August: Hosta 'Blue Mouse Ears' (blue compact, 30 cm, also flowers)
- August-September: Astilbe 'Snowdrift' (white-cream, 70 cm)
Six months, at least two things in bloom at once. Don't believe shade is boring — it's discipline.
Leaf as star
Not all Hosta are green. 'Gold Standard' brings light to dark. 'Blue Angel' and 'Halcyon' have bluish bloom — elegant against red Astilbe. 'Sum and Substance' is yellow, nearly neon-green, can stand alone on scale and colour.
Astilbe's plumes are secondary to its leaf: fine, early reddish, later green. You accept this leaf even after blooming — it gives structure through October.
Layering
- Back (120-150 cm): Astilbe 'Bridal Veil', 'Snowdrift', or hydrangea for height
- Middle (70-90 cm): Large Hosta ('Sum and Substance', 'Blue Angel') or Astilbe species
- Front (30-50 cm): Small Hosta ('Gold Standard', 'Halcyon') with compact Astilbe
- Ground (5-20 cm): Moss-like or soft groundcovers
No gaps — everything overlapping, full charge.
Care
Both love moist soil during growing season (May-August). In dry autumn, watering aids overwintering. Pruning: leave Astilbe standing until October-November (pretty dried), don't cut Hosta — they overwinter with foliage against cold. Add compost in March yearly, no fertiliser needed.
Because they grow together, they can share one heavy compost home without competition. Their roots settle at different depths.
Colour schemes
- Warm: Astilbe 'Fanal' (red) + Hosta 'Gold Standard' (yellow) — full contrast, cheerful
- Cool: Astilbe 'Bridal Veil' (white) + Hosta 'Halcyon' (blue-green) — elegant, refined
- Mixed: Astilbe 'Snowdrift' (cream) + Hosta 'Blue Angel' (grey) — restful
No wrong combination — everything works in shade.
Frequently asked questions
Does Astilbe really grow in full shade?
Yes, but it blooms better with 2-4 hours sun or brightest shade. In very deep shade, leaf grows well, blooming becomes sparse. Moist soil compensates for some sun lack.
Why do slugs destroy my Hosta?
Hosta attracts slugs more than other shade plants. Catch: lots of organic matter around the plant keeps moisture, slugs too. Don't trim all compost to zero — you risk drought. Trade-off: Astilbe suffers far less from slugs.
Can Astilbe and Hosta share the same spot year after year?
Absolutely. They don't compete — hosta's deep-rooting, Astilbe shallow. Add compost yearly. After five years you can divide Hosta if it gets too thick, that gives cuttings for other corners.
When do I harvest Astilbe for dried flower books?
August-September as plumes turn early brown-pink, before you see them fully grey. Dried bloomers grow beautifully, last months. Hosta leaf cannot dry, falls apart.
