Akebia quinata
The chocolate vine is a vigorous, twining climber with graceful five-lobed foliage and unusual chocolate-purple flowers appearing in April and May. The blooms release a subtle, sweet fragrance reminiscent of chocolate and vanilla. In warm weather, striking pear-shaped fruits may develop.
Allium giganteum
Giant allium is a striking bulb plant with large, globe-shaped purple flower heads on sturdy stems. The blooms appear in May and June and attract plenty of bees and butterflies. The dried seed heads remain decorative in the border well into autumn.
Clematis viticella
The Italian clematis is a vigorous, healthy climber producing an abundance of medium-sized, bell-shaped purple to blue flowers from July to September. Unlike many other clematis species, it is highly resistant to the dreaded clematis wilt. Ideal for pergolas, fences, and trees.
Liatris spicata
Blazing Star is an elegant perennial with striking purple flower spikes that bloom from top to bottom. The stiff, vertical stems appear in July and August and provide a wonderful contrast with rounder garden plants. Butterflies and bees adore the nectar-rich flowers.
Verbena bonariensis
Tall Verbena is a graceful perennial with slender stems carrying clouds of purple flower clusters. Blooming from June until the first frost, it is a magnet for butterflies. Its airy, see-through habit makes it ideal for weaving through other plants in borders.
