Overview
Papaver radicatum, better known as the arctic poppy or Icelandic poppy, is a remarkable alpine plant from the family Papaveraceae. This flower is native to the Arctic and subarctic regions of Northern Europe, from Iceland to Svalbard. It is one of the most resilient flowers in these extreme environments.
This plant is celebrated for its ability to thrive in very cold, windy conditions, making it ideal for northern gardens and rock gardens.
Appearance and blooming
The arctic poppy forms low rosettes of finely hairy, gray-green leaves that remain close to the ground. The plant typically reaches only 10 to 25 centimeters in height. The growth is compact and prostrate, an adaptation to extreme windy conditions.
The flowers are yellow to white and appear from June to August. They are relatively large for such a small plant - each flower has four petals and yellow stamens. Flowers open in the morning sun and close in the evening.
After blooming, characteristic seed pods develop that turn yellow and are important for self-sowing.
Ideal location
Full sun is essential. This plant from open Arctic grasslands does not thrive in shade. A minimum of six to eight hours of direct sun daily is required. A southwest-facing position in the northern hemisphere or equatorward side in the south.
Wind is not a problem - indeed, the plant is adapted to windy conditions. However, plantings should provide shelter against very strong winds that could damage flowers.
Good ventilation helps prevent fungal diseases.
Soil
Well-draining, poor soil is essential. This plant colonizes rocky alpine soils in the wild. In gardens, use rocky, gritty growing medium. Adding gravel or sharp sand to standard soils improves drainage.
The plant accepts both calcareous and acidic soils. pH between 6 and 7.5 is ideal. Over-fertilization leads to weak growth and reduced flowering.
Waterlogging is fatal - this plant must grow in very well-drained soil.
Watering
Moderate to normal watering during the growing period. Water weekly but ensure soil does not become waterlogged. The plant is fairly drought-tolerant once established.
Overwatering causes immediate root rot. Furthermore, Arctic climate plants grow weakly in rich, wet environments. Water sparingly.
In wet winters, watering must be extremely cautious.
Pruning
Minimal pruning is required. Remove spent flowers to prevent self-seeding if desired, though the plant readily self-sows.
Wilted leaves can be removed in spring. Otherwise, the plant requires no maintenance in terms of pruning.
Maintenance calendar
Spring (April-May): Plant begins growth. Water moderately if dry. Check for diseases.
Summer (June-July): Blooming period. Remove spent flowers if self-seeding is undesired. Water during extreme drought.
Autumn (August-September): Seed pod formation. Allow seed to mature. Plant gradually dies back.
Winter (October-March): Plant is completely dormant. No water or maintenance needed. Protection against extreme moisture is the only necessity.
Winter hardiness
Papaver radicatum is exceptionally hardy. It can withstand temperatures to -30 degrees Celsius or colder. In fact, it is better adapted to Arctic than temperate environments.
In temperate winter, the plant suffers more from moisture than from cold. A dry position is more critical than protection against frost.
This plant is ideal for very cold regions where other flowers fail.
Companion plants
Combine with other alpine plants and drought-tolerant gardens:
- Alpine asters for purple tones
- Silene (catchfly) for pink
- Sempervivum (houseleek) for structure
- Armeria (sea pink) for dark foliage
- Other alpine poppies for variation
Final thoughts
The arctic poppy is a true treasure for alpine plant lovers. It can grow where other flowers fail - in extreme cold, poor soil, and windy conditions.
