Overview

Nicotiana tabacum, the true tobacco plant, is an impressive plant originating from Bolivia. This species belongs to the Solanaceae family and is known worldwide for its economic and medicinal significance. In European gardens, however, this plant is primarily grown for its ornamental value, particularly the striking red to pink flowers.

The tobacco plant grows as a vigorous shrub to about 150-200 centimeters in height and has large, elegant leaves. During the flowering period, it produces numerous red to pink tubular flowers in loose panicles. The plant is very decorative and attracts many pollinators. Like all Nicotiana species, this plant is toxic and must be handled with care. The plant can be grown in both open ground and large pots.

Appearance and bloom

Nicotiana tabacum grows as an upright, vigorous shrub with lance-shaped, large leaves. The leaves are dark green, 30-60 centimeters long and have a striking grooved structure. The plant takes on a full, majestic appearance through its size and leaf mass.

The flowers are elongated tubular, approximately 3-4 centimeters long and appear in large, loose, paniculate inflorescences. The color varies from deep red to pink to sometimes white. The flowering period runs from July to October, making this plant a valuable element for long-lasting blooms. The flowers give off a pleasant fragrance, especially in the evening.

Ideal location

Nicotiana tabacum grows best in a very sunny location that receives at least eight hours of direct sunlight per day. A south to southwest-facing position is ideal. The plant is strongly thermophilic and clearly grows better in warm years and warm microclimates. A protected spot against cold wind is important.

Provide plenty of space for full growth - this plant can grow substantially. Good air circulation helps prevent moisture problems. In more temperate climates, a south-facing wall or heat-retaining wall can significantly improve the growing result. Do not plant this too close to other plants as it needs plenty of space.

Soil

Nicotiana tabacum prefers nutrient-rich, well-maintained soil with good drainage. The plant requires more nutrition than some other Nicotiana species. A pH value of neutral to very slightly acidic (6.0-7.5) is ideal.

Work the soil well before planting with ripe compost or other organic matter to improve fertility and moisture retention. For pot culture, use standard potting soil with extra compost. This plant thrives better in nutrient-rich conditions. Good drainage is essential because the plant is susceptible to root rot in waterlogged soil.

Watering

Nicotiana tabacum has moderate to high water requirements and grows better when regularly watered. Water when the top layer of soil feels dry, usually two to three times per week in normal conditions. During dry periods and summer, daily watering may be necessary.

Make sure water penetrates well into the soil and excess water can drain away. Water preferably at the base of the plant. The plant does not tolerate dry feet and will quickly suffer without adequate water. In autumn and winter, water is gradually reduced.

Pruning

Pruning promotes bushier growth. In spring, you can top young plants to encourage branching. Regularly remove spent flowers (deadhead) to encourage further blooming and keep the plant neat.

Remove dead, damaged or yellow leaves. If flower clusters become too long, you can carefully trim them. At the end of the season, when frost threatens, you can remove damaged wood. Regular pruning helps keep the plant young and more abundant.

Maintenance calendar

In spring (May), after all frost danger has passed, sow seeds or plant seedlings. Provide regular and generous watering and feed with a balanced fertilizer once every two weeks. In summer, ensure good watering and continuous deadheading. Monitor for pest insects.

In September to October, as temperatures drop and flowering declines, gradually reduce watering. In November, when frost threatens, you must bring the plant indoors (for potted plants) or remove it (for garden plants). Collect seeds for next year.

Winter hardiness

This is not a winter-hardy plant. Nicotiana tabacum dies when temperatures drop below about 5 degrees Celsius. In Northern Europe, this plant cannot overwinter outdoors. After the first frost danger (November), the plant must be removed.

For seed saving next year: collect ripe seeds and store them in a cool, dry place until next spring. For potted plants: bring these indoors to a bright, warm room (about 15-18 degrees Celsius) and water very little to moderately.

Companion plants

Nicotiana tabacum combines beautifully with other heat-loving plants. Suitable combinations include: other Nicotiana species, Brugmansia, Mandevilla, Solanum, sunflowers, Lantana, Fuchsia, Cleome and other summer bloomers. The red flowers contrast nicely with silver-leaved plants.

Place this plant toward the back because of its height. Silver-leaved plants such as Senecio and Artemisia provide beautiful contrast effects. For a tropical atmosphere, combine this with other South American plants such as Brugmansia.

Closing

Nicotiana tabacum is an impressive plant that produces red flowers from July to October and is a spectacular addition to warm gardens. With proper care, plenty of sun, nutrient-rich soil and regular watering, you will enjoy this beautiful plant. Remember that all parts are toxic and proceed with caution.
