Passiflora caerulea
The Blue Passion Flower is a fast-growing climber with exotic-looking blooms featuring a complex structure of blue, white, and purple filaments. It flowers from June to September and sometimes produces orange fruits. The plant clings with tendrils and quickly covers pergolas and fences.
Plant in full sun against a sheltered, warm wall in well-drained soil. Water regularly in summer but avoid wet feet in winter. Feed monthly during the growing season. Protect the base with mulch against winter frost.
Prune in early spring by removing dead and weak shoots. Shorten side shoots to two or three buds. On older plants, hard pruning can encourage renewal growth.
Jasminum officinale
Common Jasmine is a fast-growing climber with clusters of small, star-shaped white flowers that release an intoxicatingly sweet fragrance from June to September. The plant can climb up to 10 metres along pergolas, fences, and walls. The scent is strongest in the evening.
Clematis montana
Mountain clematis is a fast-growing climber that becomes smothered in white or pink flowers during May and June. The plant can cover large surfaces in a short time, making it ideal for growing over pergolas, fences, and unsightly walls. The lightly fragrant blooms appear on the previous year's wood.
Wisteria sinensis
Chinese wisteria is a vigorous climbing plant that produces spectacular hanging flower clusters in spring. The fragrant purple, blue, or white blooms appear before the foliage has fully unfurled. A mature plant can completely cover walls and pergolas with a lush canopy of leaves.
