Gardening in the Western Mediterranean: Southern France, Spain and Portugal

The sun rules: the western Mediterranean climate

Along the coasts of Southern France, Spain and Portugal, the sun is king. Dry, hot summers with months of no rain. Mild, wet winters that turn the growing season upside down compared with Northern Europe. Here you do not grow from spring to autumn — you grow from autumn to spring, with a dormant period through the scorching summer.

Temperatures of 35 to 40 degrees are standard in July and August inland in Andalusia and the Alentejo. On the coast the sea breeze tempers the heat, but drought persists. In Provence and Languedoc annual rainfall is 500 to 700 mm, nearly all of it falling between October and March.

Water: the most precious resource

Water management sits at the heart of Mediterranean gardening. Every drop counts. Drip irrigation is not a luxury but the norm. Mulch with stone chippings, shells or bark to keep the soil cool and reduce evaporation. Collecting rainwater in a cistern — a tradition thousands of years old — deserves a place in every Mediterranean garden.

Group plants by water need. Place drought-tolerant species together and give thirsty plants a separate bed closer to the tap.

Plants that embrace the heat

The fragrant Mediterranean flora

Lavender, rosemary, thyme, sage and cistus (rock rose) form the backbone of any Mediterranean garden. They are not merely drought-tolerant — they also release essential oils that turn the garden into a scented paradise. Oleander flowers for months in hot pink, white and salmon. Bougainvillea cloaks walls in an explosion of purple and magenta.

Trees for shade

The olive tree is the icon of the Mediterranean. But stone pines (Pinus pinea), cypresses, almond trees and fig trees also provide structure and shade. Citrus trees — orange, lemon, mandarin — thrive in sheltered coastal gardens.

Succulents and fleshy plants

Agave, Aloe, Aeonium and succulents such as Sedum and Echeveria are perfect for dry corners. They need virtually no water and bring sculptural forms to the garden.

The inverted seasons

September–November: The new growing season begins. The first rains fall and the earth comes alive. Plant perennials now, sow annuals and lay turf. This is the best planting window.

December–February: Mild winters with occasional light frost inland. Citrus trees bear fruit. Almond trees bloom in February — one of the most beautiful sights of the Mediterranean spring.

March–May: Spring is short but glorious. Poppies, wild orchids and daisies paint the fields. Savour it, because it goes fast.

June–August: The dormant period. Most plants survive on reserves. Water sparingly but deeply. Hold off pruning until the heat subsides.

Soil: chalk and clay

Mediterranean soils are often chalky, stony and low in organic matter. That sounds unfavourable, but many Mediterranean plants are adapted precisely to these conditions. Improve the soil with compost in the planting hole, but do not overdo it: overly rich soil makes Mediterranean plants leggy and disease-prone.

Heavy clay appears in parts of the Algarve and the Ebro Valley. Drainage there is crucial — standing water combined with heat is a recipe for root rot.

Style and atmosphere

The Mediterranean garden style revolves around terracotta, natural stone, gravel and shaded seating areas. A pergola covered with grape vines or wisteria offers cooling relief. A water feature — even a small fountain — creates an oasis effect. Garden furniture of wrought iron or teak fits the look.

Lighting is magical here. Warm spotlights among olive trees and lavender beds make a Mediterranean evening unforgettable.
