Overview

Creeping grape (Vitis flexuosa) is an elegant, fast-growing climbing vine native to China, Japan, tropical Asia and surrounding regions. This woody climbing plant belongs to the Vitaceae family (grape family) and is prized for its elegant, fine foliage and sinuous growth habit. The plant grows naturally as a forest climber in mixed woodland areas of low to moderate relief in its native habitat.

Creeping grape grows very quickly, sometimes exceeding 1 metre per season, making it ideal for rapid coverage of pergolas, walls and fences. The plant eventually reaches 4 to more than 6 metres in length, depending on support and growing conditions. This is an exceptionally valuable plant for those seeking ornamental climber that is not considered invasive.

Appearance and bloom

Creeping grape features very fine, three-lobed leaves (approximately 4 to 10 centimetres) that appear delicate and elegant at first glance. The leaves have sharp serrated edges and remain glossy green throughout the growing season. In autumn, the leaves sometimes develop light green to yellow hues before dropping.

The plant produces small, inconspicuous yellow-green flowers appearing June-July in small, compound clusters. These flowers are not spectacular but do attract flying insects. Following pollination, small fruits develop, first green then darkening to dark purple to black as they mature. These small grapes are not edible but highly attractive to birds.

The plant produces twining tendrils with adhesive cork-like suction cups, allowing it to grip supporting structures very firmly. This gives the plant a very natural, draping growth pattern.

Ideal location

Creeping grape grows best in full sun to half-shade. Ideally, position it where it receives at least 4 to 5 hours of direct sunlight daily. The plant tolerates partial shade better than many other climbers, making it very flexible for different garden locations.

Position this climbing vine where it can grow along a pergola, garden wall, fence or garden building. Creeping grape works excellently as a green curtain, privacy screen, or against hot walls and facades where shade is desired. Combined with other climbers, it creates an exceptionally attractive layered effect.

Soil

Creeping grape is very adaptable to different soil types. The plant grows well in both acid and neutral to slightly alkaline soils (pH 5.5 to 7.5). Very moisture-rich soils are less ideal without improved drainage, but the plant tolerates them better than many other climbers.

Add compost or leaf mould at the planting hole to improve water-holding capacity. This helps especially during dry seasons. In heavy clay soils, incorporate sand or perlite for improved drainage. Once established, the plant is reasonably adaptable to soil conditions.

Watering

Creeping grape requires regular water during the first two growing seasons, especially when actively growing. Water deeply and regularly while the soil feels moist. Once established, the plant is reasonably drought-tolerant, although it performs better with regular moisture.

During very dry summers, provide supplemental water, especially if the plant grows on warm, well-draining sites. Monitor leaf appearance from above. If leaves begin to droop, it is time to water. In moist seasons, supplemental water is practically unnecessary.

Pruning and training

Creeping grape can be lightly pruned annually to maintain shape and control excessive growth. Prune in early spring (March-April) before growth commences. Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches. The plant can grow aggressively, so regular pruning is recommended.

To train the plant along a pergola, guide the main stems horizontally along the framework and secure with plant ties. This promotes lateral branching and better distribution across the entire structure. Without training, the plant grows haphazardly.

Maintenance calendar

January to February: Plant preparation. Check for storm damage.

March to April: Growth accelerates. Prune if necessary. Apply fertiliser.

May to June: Bloom begins. Growth is very active. Monitor watering.

June to July: Full growth. Small yellow-green flowers appear.

August to September: Fruit development. Berries ripen. Enjoy bird activity.

October to November: Leaf drop. Plant preparation for winter.

December: Winter dormancy. Minimal activity.

Winter hardiness

Creeping grape is modestly winter hardy and grows without much difficulty in USDA hardiness zones 5 to 9 (approximately -23 to 0 degrees Celsius in winter extremes). In colder zones (3-4), the plant may freeze back to ground level in very severe winters, but will normally regrow from underground parts in spring.

In very cold climates, plant it against a sheltered, south-facing wall where considerable warmth accumulates. Winter wrapping can be beneficial for young plants in their first season in harsh climates.

Companion plants

Creeping grape pairs well with other climbers and shade providers:

  • Clematis species (clematis)
  • Other Vitis species (grapes)
  • Hedera (ivy)
  • Lonicera (honeysuckle)
  • Lathyrus (sweet pea)

Also combine with shade-loving groundcovers beneath.

Final thoughts

Creeping grape is an excellent choice for those seeking ornamental climbers that are not invasive. Plant against a pergola or wall where it can quickly expand. The plant thrives in virtually all regions and is very rewarding. Nurseries and specialist climbing plant suppliers stock this Asian climbing grape.

This plant attracts many birds and supports local ecosystems beautifully. It is also very valuable for beekeepers as it attracts numerous insects. Plant at least one specimen, but preferably add two for cross-pollination and improved fruit production.
