Overview

Verbena canescens, commonly known as Gray Vervain, is an elegant American herb-like plant from southwestern America. This drought-tolerant species offers fine gray-green foliage, extended flowering periods with purple to pink blooms, and exceptional robustness in dry conditions. Perfect for sunny borders, rock walls and Mediterranean plantings.

Appearance & Bloom

The plant grows 30-60 centimeters with elegant, upright to spreading habit. Leaves are fine, hairy, grayish-green, giving the plant its characteristic 'gray' appearance. Flowers are small, clustered, ranging purple to pink to white, appearing May-October. This extended bloom period is wonderful for pollinator activity.

Ideal Location

Place in full sun with minimum six hours direct sunlight daily. Perfect for raised borders, rock walls, pergolas and sunny locations. Excellent for Mediterranean gardens, gravel gardens and dry plantings. Also useful as dried flowers for arrangements.

Soil

Grows optimally in well-draining, lean soils. Not fussy about pH and thrives in both acidic and alkaline conditions. Add grit or sand to heavy clay soils improving drainage. Avoid rich soils promoting excessive foliage growth.

Watering

Although sun-loving and drought-tolerant, water regularly during establishment period (6-8 weeks). Once established, extremely drought-tolerant, rarely needing water beyond normal rainfall. Avoid overwatering which causes wilting.

Pruning

Thinning to two-thirds after flowering promotes compact growth and better form next season. Remove diseased branches immediately. Formative pruning unnecessary as natural growth is already elegant.

Maintenance Calendar

Spring: Plant April-May after last frost. Growing: Support growth with monthly watering. Summer: Allow flowers to flourish without extra feeding. Autumn: Light pruning after first bloom, then for winter retention. Winter: Protect from extreme frost in cold years.

Winter Hardiness

Hardy to approximately -5 to -10°C, meaning excellent growth in most Dutch climate zones. In severe winters plants may suffer damage but usually recover quickly.

Companion Plants

Perfect pairings with other drought-tolerant plants like Achillea, Sedum, Santolina and Mediterranean herbs. Beautiful with blue flowers like Agapanthus, Nepeta or Salvia. Avoid moisture-loving neighbors.

Closing

Verbena canescens deserves a place in every sunny border offering year-round elegant form. The combination of gray foliage, extended purple blooming and extreme drought tolerance makes this a unique choice for low-maintenance gardening.
