Overview
Sedum laxum, known as Roseflower stonecrop, is an elegant succulent from the Crassulaceae family found in the American West (Oregon and Northern California). This plant is valued for its soft green, elegant rosette formation and particularly for its beautiful rose-tinted flowers that open in summer. The plant reaches 15-25 cm in height and forms slowly growing, loose colonies.
This is a perfect plant for alpine gardeners and collectors of interesting succulents. The fine texture and delicate flowers give the plant an elegant appearance.
Appearance & Bloom
The leaves of Sedum laxum are quite soft green with sometimes reddish tints in full sun. They grow in beautiful, loose rosettes that appear elegant and refined. The rosettes spread slowly via short, deep roots.
From May through October, the main flowers appear - small pink to red flowers on slender stems. These flowers are highly attractive to pollinators.
Ideal Location
Sedum laxum thrives in full sun to partial shade. For best colored flowers and most pollination, place in full sun. It also grows in partial shade but flowers may be less intensely colored. The plant loves warm, dry spots but can also grow in cool mountain locations.
Tolerant of windy situations and strong sun. The plant grows well on slopes and raised beds.
Soil
Well-draining soil is essential. Use sand-rich or gritty soil with excellent drainage. For containers, use standard succulent potting mix. For ground plantings, loosen the soil and add sand and gravel.
PH can be neutral to slightly acidic. Avoid heavy, rich soils. This plant grows best on poor soil.
Watering
Once established, highly drought-tolerant. In the first season, water carefully once weekly. After stabilization, water only when soil feels completely dry (usually once every 2-3 weeks during growing season).
In winter, water minimally. Avoid excess moisture absolutely.
Pruning
Minimal pruning needed. Remove dead leaves and stems. The plant grows cautiously; do not force it.
Maintenance Calendar
Spring: Begin cautious watering. Check for winter damage.
Summer: Water sparingly. Enjoy pink flowers. They attract pollinators.
Autumn: Flowering may continue. Water carefully.
Winter: Minimal water. Keep dry.
Winter Hardiness
Sedum laxum is hardy to USDA zone 6 (-23 to -18 degrees Celsius). This makes it suitable for many European regions, including much of Central and Northern Europe. In very cold areas, protect with dry mulch.
Companion Plants
Sedum laxum pairs well with:
- Sedum spathulifolium: similar growth patterns
- Sempervivum: related families
- Dianthus alpinus (alpine carnation): adapted growth, complementary colors
- Phlox subulata (creeping phlox): low growing, complementary flowers
- Lewisia species: similar requirements and alpine preference
