Overview

Blue Creeper Sage (Salvia procurrens) is a low-growing, spreading sage from southern Brazil, Uruguay and northeastern Argentina. This plant is a true groundcover with continuous blue flowers throughout the season. The species grows naturally along riverbanks and grassy slopes, where it spreads horizontally like soft green carpeting.

For gardeners wanting low, flower-rich screens without much effort, Blue Creeper Sage is a perfect choice. The plant also works superbly in hanging planters, where creeping stems cascade elegantly downward.

Appearance and Bloom

Blue Creeper Sage grows densely, low and spreading, usually not exceeding 20-30 centimeters height. The stems are thin, flexible and tend to spread horizontally. The leaves are small, narrow, green and very densely packed.

Flowers appear continuously from May to October (in moderate climate) in small, upright spikes. The color is bright blue-purple to violet. Each flower is approximately 0.8 centimeters, giving the plant a delicate appearance.

Seeds form regularly and continue from bloom to bloom. The plant is highly prolific and can produce hundreds of small flowers in a good season.

Ideal Location

Full sun is ideal, although the plant also blooms in partial shade. With at least 4 to 6 hours direct sunlight daily, the plant blooms abundantly.

The plant can be used as:

  • Ground cover under shrubs
  • Border plant along paths
  • Hanging plant in baskets and containers
  • Filler plant for gaps in borders

Protection from heavy foot traffic is desirable, as the plant is slow-growing and easily trampled.

Soil

Blue Creeper Sage grows best in moderately moist, well-draining soil. Unlike many other sages, this species is not extremely drought-loving.

Ideal soil base:

  • Well-draining, loamy sand mixture
  • Moderate nutrition
  • pH 6.0 to 7.5
  • Moisture retention (not wet, but not dry)

In very dry, sandy soil this plant grows slowly. Adding compost or composted leaves to the planting area helps.

Watering

Unlike many Salvia species, Blue Creeper Sage somewhat loves moisture. During the growing season (May-October), water regularly. Soil should not dry out, but should not be wet either.

Schedule:

  • Spring/summer: water 2-3 times per week, depending on weather
  • Fall: water 1-2 times per week
  • Winter: minimal watering (only if needed)

In hanging planters, soil dries much faster, so daily watering may be necessary in sunny periods.

Pruning

The plant benefits from regular pinching to encourage more branching and blooming. Pinch growing tips regularly from May to August. This ensures dense, ball-shaped growth.

Wilted flowers can be continuously removed, although this is not necessary for more blooms. Late summer pruning helps:

  • Late September: cut back lagging stems to about 10 centimeters
  • This stimulates more compact formation

Maintenance Calendar

March-April: Plantings; begin pinching; establish watering. May: Full bloom; regular watering; continue pinching. June-July: Bloom peak; continue watering; seeds may appear. August: Stop pinching; continued blooming; hot weather = daily water. September: Careful pruning; bloom declines; reduce water. October-November: Bloom stops; no water needed; prepare for winter. December-February: Frost-sensitive plant winterized; very limited water.

Winter Hardiness

Blue Creeper Sage is frost-sensitive and can overwinter outdoors in mild climates (south Netherlands, Belgium, southern France) with protection. Above the Amsterdam-Germany line, pot storage indoors is preferable.

Winter protection:

  • Dry mulch around base
  • In very cold winters: pot in garage/greenhouse
  • In pots, winter transport works well in cool houses

Practical note: Many gardeners grow this as an annual or take cuttings for winter.

Companion Plants

Blue Creeper Sage combines beautifully with other low-growing, flowering plants.

Co-plants (in borders):

  • Low blue mealy sage (Salvia farinacea)
  • Silver bugleweed (Ajuga reptans)
  • Bergamot (Monarda didyma)

In hanging planters:

  • Dusty miller (Senecio cineraria)
  • Bacopa (Bacopa monnieri)
  • Petunia (Petunia)

Ground combinations:

  • Ground cover with low mealy sage
  • Flowers forward with this sage

Closing

Blue Creeper Sage is a delightful plant for those wanting continuous color without much effort. Ideal for pots, borders and hanging plants. For warm seasons, a goldmine of flowers. Available at major retailers.
