Overview

Salvia clevelandii, commonly called Fragrant Sage, is an evergreen shrublet native to Southern California. This attractive plant is beloved for its finely textured, aromatic foliage that releases a pleasant fragrance when brushed. Growing naturally on dry, rocky slopes, it exhibits exceptional drought tolerance, making it an ideal addition to a sustainable front garden.

Appearance & Bloom

This compact shrub typically grows to 60-90 centimeters tall and wide. The leaves are lance-shaped, green with a gray, velvety texture. The flowers appear in beautiful blue-purple to lavender-blue, arranged in flower clusters from June through September.

Ideal Location

Salvia clevelandii thrives best in full sun - minimum 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily is essential. A sunny spot is absolutely necessary for optimal bloom. Ensure the plant is placed where air circulates freely.

Soil

Due to its origin in dry, rocky regions, Salvia clevelandii prefers well-draining, poor to moderately fertile soil. Heavy clay soils are unsuitable. We recommend mixing grit or compost into your planting hole.

Watering

Once established, Salvia clevelandii requires very little water. After planting, water regularly during the first 4-6 weeks until well-established. Once mature, the plant can sustain itself on rainwater alone. Overwatering is dangerous.

Pruning

Regular, light pruning keeps your plant compact and full of flowers. Prune in early spring just before new growth begins, removing about one-third of old stems.

Winter Hardiness

Salvia clevelandii is semi-hardy in the Netherlands and Belgium, withstanding temperatures down to -10 degrees Celsius. In mild coastal climates, it will usually overwinter fine.

Companion Plants

Fragrant sage pairs excellently with other drought-tolerant Mediterranean plants. Combine with other Salvias, Rosemary, Lavender, and Santolina.

Closing

Salvia clevelandii is an ornamental plant for gardeners seeking low-maintenance, drought-tolerant beauty. Its aromatic foliage and bright flowers make it perfect for sustainable front gardens.
