Overview
Upright Pearlwort (Sagina micropetala) is a small, delicate plant from the Caryophyllaceae family (carnation family). This plant grows throughout Europe, from lowland to mountain areas, and is established in nearly every country from Central Europe to southern Spain and Portugal. Despite its minuscule size, this plant is extremely frost-hardy and can last decades in your rock garden or between paving stones.
Appearance & bloom
Upright Pearlwort grows only 5 to 15 centimetres tall and forms compact, thin rosettes of extremely fine, thread-thin leaves. These leaves are typically grey-green to light green. From May to July extremely small flowers (only 3 to 5 millimetres across) appear in purple to white. The flowers are virtually inconspicuous, but for careful observers a lovely detail. After flowering, tiny seed capsules appear that later open.
Ideal location
This plant thrives best in a sunny spot with well-draining soil. Between paving slabs on the south or southwest, rock garden with full sun, or in crevices of garden walls where moisture can run through - these are ideal spots. Sagina micropetala can also grow in partial shade, but will flower and grow more cautiously then. In its natural habitat it grows on alpine meadows between 800 and 2000 metres elevation.
Soil
This plant makes virtually no demands on nutrition. It grows perfectly on poor, sandy, gravelly or loamy soils. More important is that the soil drains well - stagnant water is deadly. For best results you can use a mixture of garden soil with fine gravel or sand. This plant can even grow on bird sand if you provide minimal nutrition.
Watering
Once this plant is established, it is very drought-tolerant. Its deep root system draws water from deep layers. In very dry summers you can water deeply once every two weeks. Important: make sure the soil doesn't become waterlogged in winter, as this leads to root rot. If you plant it between paving slabs, rainwater will naturally drain away.
Pruning
This plant doesn't need pruning. Dead flowers can be ignored; they fall off by themselves. If the plant spreads to places where you don't want it, you can gently pull it back. This plant is too small and delicate for real pruning.
Maintenance calendar
January-February: Check that the plant isn't waterlogged; remove dead leaves.
March-April: Careful watering begins; no fertiliser needed.
May-June: Flowering; water during exceptional dry spells.
July-August: Seed setting; minimal intervention.
September-October: Winter preparation; check drainage.
November-December: Rest period; minimal care needed.
Winter hardiness
Upright Pearlwort is very winter-hardy and grows naturally in European mountain regions. This plant can handle temperatures down to -25 degrees Celsius much better than many taller plants. Snow doesn't bother it - it welcomes winter.
Companion plants
Upright Pearlwort grows well alongside:
- Pearlwort Moss (Sagina subulata): Same grouping for fine texture.
- Moss Speedwell (Veronica serpyllifolia): Small and gentle.
- Roof Houseleek (Sempervivum tectorum): Forms contrast with its thick leaves.
- Sedum (various species): Good for drainage and full sun.
Together they create a miniature garden full of texture.
