About Prunus ilicifolia
Prunus ilicifolia belongs to the rose family (Rosaceae) and is native to California and northern Mexico. It is an evergreen shrub or small tree with leathery, glossy leaves with toothed edges, which the species name ilicifolia (holly-leaved) refers to. In spring it carries small white flowers in clusters, followed by dark fruits with a thin layer of flesh around a large stone.
In a garden the species suits a sunny spot with well-drained soil. It comes from a dry climate and copes better with drought than with wet feet. Its dense green foliage makes it useful as a hedge or a screen.
