Pelargonium inodorum, the kopata geranium or scentless geranium, is a distinctive species from the Geraniaceae family native to eastern and southeastern Australia, New Zealand, and the Chatham Islands. What sets this plant apart is the complete absence of scent in its foliage. While most geraniums possess characteristic, often pleasant aromas, Pelargonium inodorum is virtually odourless. This peculiar feature has attracted many gardeners, particularly those sensitive to plant scents. It is a subshrub or herbaceous grower that spreads rapidly in mild climates and can bloom profusely with minimal intervention. Pelargonium inodorum grows as a compact to spreading shrub, reaching 45-90 cm in height depending on conditions. The plant develops a naturally bushy silhouette with little pruning needed. Leaves are medium-sized, subdivided or toothed, typically green without aromatic character. Flowers appear in clusters over extended periods and are red, pink, white, or mixed. Each bloom measures about 1-1.5 cm, but the sheer mass of flowers creates impressive colour impact. Flowering extends from spring through late autumn under favourable conditions, with peak bloom in summer. Place Pelargonium inodorum in full sun to light shade. Minimum 4-5 hours of direct sunlight daily supports good growth. The plant accepts partial shade better than many other pelargoniums, though bloom will be somewhat reduced. In hot climates, afternoon shade is also tolerated. Water regularly during the growing season, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. A week without supplemental water is usually no problem. In rainy periods, supplemental watering may be unnecessary. Pruning promotes bushier growth. In spring, cut the plant back halfway for a more compact shape. Remove dead branches when noticed. Annual pruning keeps the plant fuller and more extensive. Pelargonium inodorum tolerates some frost better than many pelargoniums. Minimum approximately 0 to 3 degrees Celsius. In cold climates, move to shelter in late autumn. Combine well with other Australian species such as Leptospermum, Prostanthera, and Helichrysum. Mediterranean herbs like thyme, lavender, and rosemary work excellently together.
