Overview

Ottelia alismoides, known as Duck-lettuce or Water-plantain ottelia, is a fascinating aquatic plant from the Hydrocharitaceae family. This plant grows in and under water and offers an interesting option for aquariums, water features and water gardens. It is naturally found in tropical and subtropical waters from Asia to Australia.

Appearance & growth

This plant grows both as a submerged and emersed variant. The leaves are soft and vary in shape from elongated to broader depending on growing conditions. Underwater, the plant forms beautiful green foliage. Above water, flowers can appear - small but ornamental forms.

Ideal location

Ottelia thrives in clear waters with moderate to bright light. For aquariums, place the plant where sunlight can enter but not with constant intense radiation. In open water gardens, place it in water 30-60 cm deep for optimal growth.

Water

The plant grows in neutral to slightly acidic water with pH 6.0-7.0. Water temperature between 20-28C is ideal. In aquariums ensure good water circulation. Water should be clean and nutrient-rich. In large water environments, natural water is usually sufficient.

Substrate

In aquariums place the plant in soft substrate with nutrients. Sand or nutrient-rich substrate work well. No heavy soil needed. In water gardens plant on the basin floor.

Pruning

Minimal pruning needed. Remove dead or damaged leaves. You can easily propagate the plant by taking side shoots and replanting separately.

Maintenance calendar

Year-round: Check water temperature and quality. Feed as needed in aquariums (aquatic plant fertilizer). Summer: More light can promote algae growth, so monitor. Winter: In cold water features, the plant may die back.

Winter hardiness

This tropical aquatic plant cannot tolerate frost. In cold climates, grow it only in heated aquariums or indoor systems. In tropical and subtropical waters, it grows year-round outdoors.

Companion plants

Ottelia grows well with other aquatic plants. Fast-growing plants can be competitive, so place them separately. Fish usually leave this plant alone.

Closing

Ottelia alismoides brings life to your aquarium or water feature. With proper water, light and feeding, this aquatic plant grows beautifully. Enjoy its lush growth and soft foliage. For more aquatic plant tips, visit gardenworld.app!
