Overview

Ochna serrulata, commonly known as the Mickey mouse plant or carnival ochna, is a fascinating shrub from South Africa distinguished by its striking fruits. The plant owes its popular name to the red berries that resemble Mickey's ears. This tropical beauty blooms with bright yellow flowers and attracts considerable attention in gardens with warmer climates.

The Mickey mouse plant grows slowly to a medium-sized shrub and is especially popular in heated conservatories and glasshouses. In temperate regions, it's best kept in a pot that can be moved outdoors during warm months.

Appearance and bloom

The plant displays attractive, elongated, serrated leaves that are glossy dark green. The flowers are bright yellow and appear throughout the growing season. After flowering, the characteristic red fruits emerge in pairs that spread outward, creating the amusing resemblance to the famous cartoon character.

The fruits are not toxic but unsuitable for consumption. However, they are highly decorative and give the plant a playful appearance for an extended period.

Ideal location

Ochna serrulata requires a bright, sunny position to thrive. Place the plant where it receives at least four to six hours of direct sunlight daily. A south or southwest-facing windowsill is ideal.

When you place the plant outdoors during warm months, choose a spot protected from strong winds and where it won't be exposed to scorching afternoon sun if still accustomed to indoor conditions.

Soil

Use well-draining potting soil specifically formulated for houseplants. A mixture of standard potting soil with approximately 30 percent perlite or coarse sand significantly improves drainage. The Mickey mouse plant dislikes wet feet, and waterlogging must be prevented.

Ensure adequate drainage holes in the pot and use terracotta containers that allow air circulation.

Watering

Keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season but never waterlogged. Allow the top two centimeters of soil to dry out between waterings. Water carefully and ensure water drains from the pot.

In winter, reduce watering. Check regularly whether the soil has truly dried before watering again. Preferably use rainwater or cooled boiled water to prevent leaf discoloration.

Pruning

Ochna serrulata responds well to gentle pruning. Remove dead or damaged branches year-round. In spring, you can keep the plant more compact by cutting back approximately one-third of the branches.

Avoid aggressive pruning as this can result in fewer flowers during the growing season. The plant doesn't require extensive pruning, but regular maintenance keeps the form neat.

Maintenance calendar

Spring: water regularly as temperatures rise. Begin monthly feeding with balanced fertilizer. Check for pests. Summer: ensure adequate water, protect from intense sun, and feed monthly. Autumn: gradually reduce watering as it becomes cooler. Feed less frequently, approximately biweekly. Winter: much less water, no feeding, and a cooler rest period of several months promotes flowering.

Winter hardiness

Ochna serrulata is frost-sensitive and cannot overwinter outdoors in temperate regions. Place the plant indoors in a bright, cool location (around 50-59 degrees Fahrenheit) where it can rest. Incorrect temperatures or very dry indoor air can cause stress.

If you've kept the plant outdoors, ensure you bring it inside eight to ten weeks before the first frost.

Companion plants

The Mickey mouse plant pairs well with other tropical houseplants such as ficus, anthurium, and dracaena. These combinations create a mini-rainforest atmosphere on your windowsill.

Closing

The Mickey mouse plant is a unique and low-maintenance houseplant that captures everyone's attention. With proper care - plenty of light, good drainage, and regular watering - you'll enjoy the amusing red fruits and fresh yellow flowers for years to come.

Looking for a plant with personality? Ochna serrulata is certainly a recommendation. Purchase your specimen from garden centers where they're often available in spring.
