Overview

Nemesia strumosa, commonly called Cape jewels or Cape snapdragon, is a stunning warm-season annual from South Africa's Cape Provinces. This compact, floriferous plant produces months of brilliant, fragrant flowers in virtually every color imaginable. Essential for summer containers, borders, and cutting gardens.

Appearance and flowering period

Nemesia grows as a compact specimen 20-40 centimeters tall with naturally full, bushy habit. Light, fresh green foliage is fine-textured. Individual flowers are small, approximately 2 centimeters wide, almost violet-shaped with characteristic grinning upper lip. Flowers occur in astonishing color palettes: pure yellow, crisp white, deep red, orange, pink, bicolors, and more. Flowering commences May-June and persists until frost stops blooming in October-November.

Ideal location

Nemesia thrives in full sun to light shade. Minimum four hours direct sunlight daily is beneficial; more is preferable for maximum blooming and color intensity. Plant in warm, sheltered positions; it tolerates cold winds poorly. In harsh north, it benefits from artificial warmth, such as south-facing walls.

Soil requirements

Nemesia prefers fertile, lightly moist-retentive soil with good drainage. Amend garden soil with 20% composted organic matter. The plant also excels in containers with standard potting mix. Neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0-7.5) suits it well.

Watering

In-ground: water regularly, especially during dry weeks; plant tolerates moderate drought but thrives with consistent moisture. In containers: water daily during hot summers; position pots on water-reservoirs for autonomous watering. Excessive moisture promotes fungal disease.

Pruning

Pruning stimulates bushier growth. Pinch the top of young plantlets twice in May-June. This promotes lateral branching and fuller flowering. As bloom slows, remove spent flowers (deadheading) to encourage continuous blooming.

Maintenance calendar

May: Inspect plant terminals; pinch back for bushiness. June-August: Regular watering and feeding. July: Remove dead flowers; feed with dilute liquid fertilizer. August-September: Monitor for pest damage, especially spider mite. October: Reduce watering; watch for first frost warning.

Winter hardiness

Nemesia strumosa is annual and not winter-hardy. In October-November, it simply dies after first frost. In mild coastal regions, it occasionally survives until December. This is a seasonal plant for spring through autumn. Resow annually from seed.

Companion planting

Nemesia is perfect filler-plant for summer containers with other annuals. Combine with trailing petunias, bacopa, and silver-foliage toners. In borders, plant in mass drifts of single color or in mixed color assortments. This is a classic Victorian garden plant.

Closing

Nemesia strumosa delivers months of color with minimal fuss. With basic care, it blooms until hard frost. Seed available at garden centers; sow in March for May installation. For more garden design inspiration, visit gardenworld.app.
