Heuchera rubescens, commonly known as Jack-o'the-rocks, Red alumroot, or Pink alumroot, is a densely tufted alpine groundcover from the saxifrage family (Saxifragaceae). This species is endemic to rocky alpine and subalpine habitat across southwestern to central-western North America, from southern Arizona and southern California through Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and into northern Mexico. Heuchera rubescens forms tight mats typically 10 to 20 cm tall and 20 to 40 cm wide, composed of stiff, deeply lobed and cut foliage. The true defining feature is foliage color: leaves are deep red to reddish-brown, intensifying under full sun and freezing temperatures. During May through July, delicate, often red-tinged flowers appear on wiry inflorescence stems 20 to 40 cm tall, ranging from pale pink to deep rose in hue. The plant thrives in full sun and very well-draining, gravelly, or rocky soil; it abhors waterlogging and heavy clay. Winter hardiness extends to USDA zone 4 (down to -30 degrees C), allowing cultivation in high-altitude gardens and Mediterranean-climate landscapes. The species is remarkably drought-tolerant once established, requiring virtually no supplemental water except in extreme drought. Winter wetness, particularly under melting snow, causes rot and mortality. Propagation is most reliable via seed scattered on sandy or gravelly substrate. In landscape design, Red alumroot serves excellently as a crevice plant between stones, in alpine troughs, on rocky slopes and screes, on green roofs with thin substrate, and in xeriscaping borders where year-round color and minimal input are priorities. Its striking red coloration makes it a focal point in rock gardens throughout temperate regions.
