Overview

Hakea sericea, commonly known as silky hakea, bushy needlewood, or needle bush, is a fast-growing needle-leaved shrub from southeastern Australia. This shrub is renowned for its fine, needle-like foliage, striking white flowers, and excellent drought tolerance. In warm climates, hakea reaches 2-3 meters in height and quickly develops into an attractive, broad shrub. The plant is valuable as bird habitat and nectar source for honeybees.

Appearance and bloom

Hakea sericea displays delicate white flowers with light pink tints in dense clusters along the branches, especially in spring. The leaves are stiff, needle-like, and gray-green, creating a light appearance. The plant develops many side shoots creating a full, rounded form. The flowers develop into woody seed capsules that are highly decorative.

Ideal location

Silky hakea grows optimally in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. The shrub tolerates partial shade but performs better in full sun. Wind tolerance is excellent - hakea grows even in coastal and mountainous areas. The plant accepts various garden positions.

Soil

Hakea sericea makes minimal soil demands. Well-draining, acidic soil (pH 5.5-6.5) is ideal. The plant grows in poor, sandy soils as well. Heavy, wet soils must be avoided. For containers: use a mixture of garden soil, sand, and compost.

Watering

Silky hakea is highly drought-tolerant once established. Regular watering during the first growing season helps root formation. After establishment, supplemental water is rarely needed. The plant tolerates very dry conditions. Excessive water can cause root rot.

Pruning

Hakea tolerates pruning well. Regular pruning promotes dense growth. Remove dead branches and shape the shrub as desired. After pruning, numerous side shoots emerge. Old, overgrown plants can be pruned hard.

Maintenance calendar

  • March-April: Plant in warm soil
  • April-May: Initial growth; water regularly
  • June-July: Blooming begins; feed as needed
  • July-September: Full bloom; keep dry
  • September-October: Seed capsules mature

Winter hardiness

Hakea sericea is moderately winter-hardy. In southern regions, the plant can grow outdoors in protected positions. In northern areas, better grown in containers under glass or against walls. Night frosts can damage young foliage.

Companion plants

Silky hakea pairs beautifully with other Australian plants. Try ericaria, correa, or hibbertia. For contrast: silver-leaved plants like senecio. In coastal areas: combine with other storm-resistant shrubs.

Closing

Hakea sericea is a reliable, drought-tolerant shrub for warm, sunny gardens. Cultivation is straightforward, growth is rapid, and flowering is abundant. For northern gardeners: possible outdoors in southern areas, otherwise in containers. Find more plant guides at gardenworld.app.
