Overview

Alpine gentian (Gentiana alpina) is a spectacular mountain plant from the gentian family. Also known as "southern gentian", this plant grows naturally in the Pyrenees, Alps, and Sierra Nevada in Spain. The plant offers deep blue flowers that completely transform alpine rock gardens.

Appearance & Bloom

Alpine gentian reaches only 5 to 10 centimeters in height, making it perfect for rock gardens. The plant forms compact rosettes of small, dark green leaves. Deep blue to violet flowers appear from June to August. Each flower is funnel-shaped with characteristic two-toned marking in the center.

Ideal Location

Choose a location in full sun with excellent drainage. Alpine gentian grows optimally on slopes, raised beds, and between rock groupings. The plant tolerates wind better than shade. Ensure feet stay dry, especially in wet winters.

Soil

Alpine gentian requires strongly acidic soil with pH of 4 to 4.5. This is critical for successful growth. Plant in gravel-rich, mineral soil without lime. Add peat moss for pH adjustment. Drainage must be excellent.

Watering

Alpine gentian tolerates drought better than excessive moisture. Water moderately during growing period. Summer drought is not a problem. Regular watering in spring helps blooming, but do not stagnate. Dry out after blooming is essential.

Pruning

No pruning is needed. Withered flowers can be removed. Plant grows very compact and maintains natural form without intervention.

Maintenance Calendar

May: new growth starts. June-August: full bloom phase in deep blue. September: blooming decreases. October-April: dormant, slow underground growth.

Winter Hardiness

Alpine gentian is completely hardy to -20 degrees Celsius. The plant grows in mountain regions and survives harsh winters. Good drainage is more important than temperature for winter survival. In wet lowlands extra drainage is critical.

Companion Plants

Combine alpine gentian with other alpine plants: saxifrages, dianthus, aubretia, pulsatilla. The deep blue color contrasts beautifully with yellow flowers of other rock plants. Create alpine garden impression with gravel, stone, and small growth forms.

Closing

Alpine gentian brings true alpine mountain beauty to your front garden. The deep blue flowers are unparalleled in hue. Available from specialized rock garden nurseries. Discover more at gardenworld.app/nl and gardenworld.app/en.
