Overview

Cotyledon orbiculata is a fascinating succulent native to South Africa. Stores water in thick fleshy leaves and is renowned for striking, almost perfectly round leaves arranged in tight rosette formations.

Ideal for gardeners seeking low-maintenance plants with interesting architectural form. Grows slowly but known for resilience and longevity.

Appearance & bloom

Forms compact rosettes approximately 30-40 centimeters tall. Leaves are distinctly round and fleshy with grayish-blue base gradually turning red. Red pigmentation helps protect against strong UV radiation.

From spring through early summer produces tubular yellow or orange flowers in clusters. These blooms attract bees and other pollinators.

Ideal location

Thrives in very sunny locations. Provide at least 4-5 hours of direct sunlight daily. More sunlight increases red coloring. If plant remains green, needs more light.

Suits balconies, terraces and south or west-facing windowsills. In temperate climates can grow outdoors, but winter protection necessary in freezing.

Soil

Requires extremely well-draining soil. Use specialized cactus and succulent potting mix, or create own by combining with sand and perlite in 2:1 ratio.

Plant in pot with drainage holes. Waterlogged soil kills succulents. If planting in garden, choose elevated location or amend with sand.

Watering

Is drought-tolerant, storing water in leaves. Water carefully only when necessary. During growing season water when soil feels completely dry.

In winter water much less frequently. Overwatering more dangerous than underwatering with succulents.

Pruning

Requires minimal pruning. Remove dead or diseased leaves. Severed tops can be propagated as cuttings.

Maintenance calendar

Spring: Begin moderate watering. May-June perfect for flowering. Summer: Increase watering frequency. October: Start reducing water. November-February: Rest period with minimal water and cool location.

Winter hardiness

Not frost-hardy. Dies below 5-10 degrees Celsius. Bring indoors before first frost.

Companion plants

Pairs beautifully with other succulents. Try Sempervivum or Echeveria.

Closing

Dependable succulent asking little of you. With distinctive round leaves and minimal care requirements, this will ornament your garden for years.
