What are nematodes and why do they work?

Nematodes are microscopic worms that live in the soil. They are invisible to the naked eye, but enormously effective against insect larvae. The correct species nematode enters the larva, releases bacteria that eliminate the insect, and multiplies there. You apply them once, then they work for weeks. No poison, no chemicals, just nature versus nature.

This works much better than chemical control because nematodes attack exactly the larvae you do not want, without harming other soil life. They do not eat leaves; they work below ground where the problem starts. It is the most sustainable way to manage garden insects. Not sure which bare patch is worth tackling first? On gardenworld.app you see a preview of your own garden before you order anything.

Which nematode for which pest?

Different nematode species target different insect larvae. This is important: you must choose the right one. Too many gardeners apply random nematodes and then feel disappointed.

Heterorhabditis against crane fly larvae and yew beetles

Crane fly larvae (leatherjackets) eat grass roots and create bare patches. Heterorhabditis targets them. These nematodes prefer moister soil and heavier soil types. They work best from August to October and again in March and April, when soil temperature is 12-20 degrees Celsius.

Yew beetles: their larvae also sit in the ground and eat roots of box and yew. Heterorhabditis works well against them. Two applications per year: April (before they wake up) and August (for the next generation).

Steinernema against slug eggs and surface larvae

Steinernema is different. This nematode loves sandy, drier soil and lower temperatures (from 10 degrees, up to 25 degrees). It infiltrates slug eggs underground and destroys them before they hatch. Also against other surface-dwelling larvae.

This is your best choice for slug control without poison: apply Steinernema in September-October; they eat the eggs before the first frost. The following spring you will see far fewer adult slugs.

Phasmarhabditis against adult slugs

This is for real help against adult slugs already causing damage. This nematode is a parasite of adult slugs. In moist years May-June and September-October it works best.

How does soil temperature work?

This is the biggest misunderstanding: many gardeners check air temperature from the weather forecast. That is wrong. You must check soil temperature. It is 5-8 degrees lower than air temperature.

Heterorhabditis nematodes work optimally at 14-18 degrees soil temperature. Below 10 degrees they sleep; above 24 degrees they become restless and die off faster. So in May (soil just 16-18 degrees) is ideal. In July-August (soil 20-24 degrees) it is too hot: wait until late August, when it cools.

Steinernema loves 13-17 degrees. They can tolerate up to 25 degrees, but really work better in cooler months September-November and March-April.

One simple trick: stick your soil thermometer 10 cm deep. Once you know that temperature, you know if it is nematode season.

How do you apply nematodes?

This sounds complicated, but it is very simple. You receive nematodes in a small packet or pot. They are alive but dormant.

Step 1: Water the soil well

The day before application: water thoroughly. Moist soil is crucial. Nematodes swim toward insects; in dry soil they cannot reach their prey.

Step 2: Mix nematodes with water

Pour nematodes from the pot into a watering can with room-temperature water. Let them soak briefly. They reactivate. Stir well.

Step 3: Apply in the evening

Always evening or when cloudy. Never in strong sunlight. Nematodes die in UV light. Pour around root zones. For bare lawn patches spread them over the whole area.

Step 4: Keep it moist

For at least 48 hours after application the soil must not dry out. So if dry weather looms, choose another time.

Storage until use

Nematodes are alive. Store them properly.

In the fridge at 4-8 degrees, not the freezer. The packet can last 1-2 weeks depending on species. Always check expiry on the label.

Never freeze (they die), never leave in hot sunlight. Simply keep in the fridge in your vegetable drawer. Many gardeners order nematodes in August, store in the fridge, and apply them as soon as conditions are right.

Measuring if they work

After two weeks the noticeable effect starts. You see noticeably fewer bare patches in the lawn, less slug damage on the hosta, less larvae damage on bulbs underground.

Do not expect everything fixed on day one. Nematodes work slowly because they first multiply inside the larvae. But after 4-6 weeks you see clear difference.

Step-by-step

Step 1: Identify your pest

Lawn bare patches? Crane fly larvae. Slug damage? Steinernema needed. Yew declining? Heterorhabditis against yew beetle.

Step 2: Measure soil temperature

Soil thermometer 10 cm deep. Is it 14-18 degrees? Perfect timing.

Step 3: Order and store

Order nematodes online, check expiry date, store in fridge.

Step 4: Water soil thoroughly

Day before application: water, water, water. Soil must be moist.

Step 5: Mix nematodes in water

In watering can, room temperature, stir well.

Step 6: Apply in the evening

After sunset or when overcast.

Step 7: Keep moist for 48 hours

No drying! Once nematodes have established, they can tolerate drier conditions longer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mix nematodes with other biological products?

Yes, carefully. Never apply nematodes together with copper sulfate or other fungicides. Those can kill them. Fine with compost organisms (bokashi) without problem.

Do nematodes work in container plants?

Not effectively. They work in open ground with space to swim. In pots it is too confined and moisture control difficult. For potted plants: manually remove insects or use another biological product.

Can I use them multiple years in a row?

Yes, but not always needed. Depending on how many larvae you had: one application may be enough next season. Many gardeners apply yearly for prevention, especially against crane fly larvae (a recurring problem).

Five common mistakes

Applying in bright sun. UV light kills nematodes instantly. Apply in the evening.

Soil too dry. Nematodes swim in water films between soil particles. Dry soil means they die.

Wrong time of year. June-July is too hot. Wait until late August or spring.

Treating container plants. Nematodes do not work in pots. Buy a different product instead.

Overdose or underdose. Too many nematodes wastes money, too few do not work. Follow packet instructions exactly.

Cost and savings

One packet of nematodes (for 20-50 m2) costs about 10 to 15 euros. One-time. Then they work for weeks to months. Where chemical control costs money every season, nematodes are a one-time investment.

Compare: one bottle of slug pellets (poisoned) costs about 8 euros and you use it up in two applications. One nematode packet costs about 12 euros and covers the whole season.

Variants for larger use

Have a bigger garden with serious pest problems? Many suppliers also offer concentrates. In very wet ground or marshes you can apply nematodes via irrigation systems. That is for real enthusiasts and larger projects.
