TL;DR

Salt in soil (from road salt, sea wind, sea spray) burns plants dead. Prevention is easy: good drainage, compost. Cure: flush salt (much water), green manure, salt-tolerant plants (elaeagnus, tamarix, sedum, rosa rugosa). Near coast: build windbreaks.

How does salt enter your soil?

  • Road salt: Winter roads salted. Water absorbs it, drives it into soil. Stays years.
  • Sea wind (maritime climate): Coast within 5 km sea wind blows salt down. Plants absorb via leaf AND root.
  • Sea spray: Coastal houses direct salt-splash (wave action)
  • Industrial waste: Old salt pits, chemical plant nearby

How do you recognize salt damage?

  • Leaf edges burn (brown, grey, dead)
  • Growth stalls (everything weak)
  • Roots die (rot without real fungus)
  • Young plants die faster than old
  • Soil feels "sticky" after rain
  • Soil test: high sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl-)

Why does salt hurt so much?

Salt draws water from roots (osmotic pressure). Roots cannot absorb water. Plant dries from inside even if soil is wet. Also: salt damages leaf cells (burn) and binds nutrients away.

How to restore?

Step 1: Improve drainage Salt leaves via water. Build drainage trenches or pits (see other article). Water must flow through soil, flush salt away.

Step 2: Add water Much fresh water (rain, hose) flushes salt out. In dry climates: weekly water, lots. Salt goes below, drains away. Process takes 3-4 weeks.

Step 3: Add compost and organic matter Add 5-10 cm compost yearly. Organic matter buffers salt, helps good bacteria return. Also: feeds plants back.

Step 4: Green manure Sow green manure (phacelia, clover, mustard) - they grow okay on salty soil. After 6-8 weeks turn in. Helps structure recovery.

Step 5: Plant salt-tolerant types Not everything grows on salty soil. Choose plants that love or tolerate it:

  • Elaeagnus: Small shrub, silver leaf, tolerant
  • Rosa rugosa: Rose, robust, salt-tolerant
  • Tamarix: Fine twigs, Mediterranean, silver
  • Sedum: Succulent, blooms, very drought-tolerant
  • Senecio: Silver leaf, flower, very drought-tolerant
  • Phormium: Sword-like leaf, exotic, tolerant

Prevention is better than cure

Against road salt:

  • Ensure soil drains well (salt flushes away)
  • Choose salt-tolerant species from start
  • Spray water immediately after salting (before it penetrates)
  • Barrier of shrubs around house block (wind-buffer)

Against sea wind:

  • Build windbreak of trees/shrubs on sea side (100-200 metres from house)
  • Taller stock (2-3 metres) endures sea wind better
  • Salt-tolerant mix from start
  • Spray regularly (flushes salt from leaf)

Step-by-step

Step 1: Measure salt content

Soil test (lab) shows: sodium (Na+) high? Yes? Salt damage likely. Check value (over 200 mg/kg = problem).

Step 2: Improve drainage

Salt leaves with water. Make drainage trench or pit. Water must flow below surface level (see other article). Without drainage: salt stays.

Step 3: Add water

Lots of water 3-4 weeks. Weekly hose (or rain) - flush salt below. Key in dry spell.

Step 4: Add compost

Yearly 5-10 cm compost over surface (best spring). Gives organic matter, buffers salt, feeds soil-life back.

Step 5: Choose salt-tolerant species

Plant elaeagnus, rosa rugosa, tamarix, sedum, or other salt-holder. Avoid salt-sensitive (azalea, hydrangea, many flowers).

Step 6: Patience

Salt damage restores in 1-2 years. Combination of drainage + water + compost + right plants. Not faster.

Salt-tolerant plants

Shrubs:

  • Elaeagnus (silver, robust, large)
  • Rosa rugosa (rose, fragrant, fruit)
  • Tamarix (fine leaf, purple/pink, light)
  • Phillyrea (olive, small, evergreen)
  • Hippophae (sea-buckthorn, orange fruit, durable)

Medium (1-1.5 m):

  • Senecio (silver leaf, yellow flower)
  • Santolina (silvery-yellow, small shrub)
  • Helichrysum (edelweiss, silver, durable)
  • Armeria (thrift, compact, pink)

Very low:

  • Sedum (succulent, tolerant, dry)
  • Limonium (sea-lavender, purple flower)
  • Armeria (sea-thrift, pink, low)

Grass/sedges:

  • Elytrigia (sand fescue, green, hardy)
  • Juncus (rush, growth, tolerant)
  • Festuca (fine grass, green)

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if salt is the problem?

  • Plant symptoms: brown leaf edges, weak growth
  • Location: near sea, after winter salting, after sea wind
  • Soil test: high sodium (Na+) or chloride (Cl-)
  • Taste: soil tastes salty if licked (not recommended!)

How much water to flush salt?

Rule of thumb: 2-3x normal rainfall per week, 3-4 weeks. So ~50-100 mm per week, 4 weeks = 200-400 mm total. In dry climate: spray daily (garden hose).

Do salt-shedders really work?

Salt-shedder (chelate products) are aids, not solution. They help plants short-term, but salt stays. Better: drainage + water + compost.

Can I not just seal garden?

No. Plastic over garden = no air = bacteria dead = soil worse. Forget it.

How long to recover?

1-2 years with good drainage and water. Some plants (very sensitive) maybe not back. But majority recover if you do compost/water/drainage work.

What if municipality uses road salt?

Risk for every front yard near road. Prevention: high support/wall (salt-spray intercept), salt-tolerant plants, good drainage. Or ask municipality gentle snow-thaw (beet-salt works less).

Are there plants that GROW on salt?

Yes! Maritime plants (halophytes):

  • Statice (sea-lavender)
  • Armeria (sea-thrift)
  • Atriplex (sea-rocket)
  • Zostera (seagrass)
  • Limonium (sea-lavender)

These grow even better with some salt. Handy at coast!
