Why use rainwater?

Rainwater is better for plants than tap water. It contains no chlorine and has no chemical treatment. At the same time, you save significantly on water costs and help the environment. An average roof of 100 m2 collects 10,000-20,000 liters per rainfall. Much of it is now wasted in gutters. Your garden would be grateful.

Rainwater is free. No water company charging you for it. In dry summers you save hundreds of liters of tap water, noticeably lowering your monthly bills.

Where do you start?

It begins with a simple question: where is your house? How large is your roof, and how much water does your garden need? A small townhouse with 40 m2 of roof area receives 40,000-50,000 liters of rainwater per month (in temperate climates, roughly 800-900 mm per year). Even in dry periods something falls.

The quickest approach? Start with a collection barrel of 200-300 liters against your downpipe. Much cheaper than elaborate systems, and you notice the difference immediately. Want to expand later? You can always add more barrels.

What do you need?

Very little, really. A barrel (200-500 liters), a rain outlet pipe (you already have one), a filter to stop leaves, and possibly hoses to pump water to distant corners. Many people start with a single barrel against the wall; others stack two or three.

For storms and overflow (yes, even 500 liters fill up in heavy rain), an overflow valve with drainage to the garden or sewer. This prevents your roof from flooding.

How do you prevent mosquitoes and smell?

That is the first question when building a free water storage system. A closed lid is essential. Mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant water; a tight lid with a small inlet hole blocks them. For smell: ensure the water moves (small fountain) or add organic matter (leaf litter, plants). A thin surface film also prevents odour.

Check every two weeks if the water still smells fresh. In wet seasons rarely a problem. In hot summers odour can develop faster - then circulation is key.

How do you connect your barrel?

Your gutter drains water via a pipe. You can interrupt that pipe at your barrel: take an outlet elbow (available at the hardware store for 5-10 euros), fit it into the pipe, and connect it with a hose to your barrel. Cover it with a filter (fine mesh or cheesecloth) to catch leaves.

For multiple barrels: connect them in series (barrel 1 overflows into barrel 2) so you use maximum volume. An overflow hose from the last barrel goes to your sewer or garden area.

That setup takes an afternoon and costs 30-80 euros.

How much water can you actually collect?

Rule of thumb: per 1 mm rain and 1 m2 roof you collect about 1 liter. A roof of 50 m2 collects 500 liters in 10 mm rain. A shower of 20 mm (not unusual) gives you 1000 liters.

In a dry year you might count on 300-400 mm rain (instead of the typical 850 mm). That means your garden gets at most 15,000-20,000 liters per year from your roof. Sounds like a lot, but a lush garden uses 30-50 liters per day in summer months.

Start cautiously: one barrel is better than nothing, and you fill it faster than you think.

Step-by-step

Step 1: Choose your roof and drainage point

Determine where your roof drains water. Usually via gutters and downpipes. Look at your house exterior and find the natural drainage points. A roof on the front drains toward the front wall; the back drains rearward.

Step 2: Position your barrel correctly

Place your barrel directly under the downpipe or gutter. Ensure it stands stably (on hard ground, not sand) and is accessible by hose or watering can. A 200-liter barrel is not too heavy (about 220 kg full of water), but check your foundation.

Step 3: Connect the outlet and add a filter

Interrupt your downpipe just above the barrel. Use a connector or adapter to direct water into the barrel. Place a fine mesh filter (for example, a sieve or basket with mesh) at the inlet so leaves do not fall into the water.

Step 4: Install an overflow outlet

When your barrel is full, water must go somewhere. Connect an overflow hose (diameter 13-16 mm) to the top of the barrel and direct it to your sewer or a wildlife drinking spot in the garden. This prevents rainwater from flowing uselessly off your wall.

Frequently asked questions

Can I water when it is very hot?

Usually not ideal. Watering in full sun causes much evaporation without plants benefiting. Better to water early (before 9 am) or late (after 6 pm). Rainwater helps here: it is usually cooler than tap water and your plant has more time to absorb it before it evaporates.

Can I use rainwater for everything?

Yes, except where there is heavy lime buildup (certain regions). Rainwater is neutral to slightly acidic, which many plants prefer. For vegetable gardens, herb gardens, fruit - it is ideal.

How clean is rainwater?

Clean enough for plants. Your roof collects some leaves, bird droppings, and dust, but that is what the filter is for. If you let the water sit for a day before using it, much sediment settles to the bottom. For human drinking? Not without treatment, but for plants entirely suitable.

What if my barrel freezes in winter?

In severe frost (below -5 degrees Celsius) water can freeze. Then gently drain your barrel to its lowest point. Many gardeners empty their barrels in October/November and refill them in March.

Expansion: more barrels, more water

Do you have more space and want to collect larger quantities? Connect two or three barrels in series. The first barrel fills quickly and overflows into the second, which overflows into the third. That way you store 500-1000 liters without taking up much space.

For serious harvesting gardeners use underground tanks (1000-5000 liters). But those cost considerably. Start at surface level and see if you capture enough water before investing in subsurface systems.
