TL;DR: Mulch with wood chips in three steps

Spread 5-10 cm of wood chips around your plants, leaving space near stems, and you have a natural weed barrier. Replace part yearly. Cheap and effective.

Why use wood chips?

Wood chips are the cheapest and most sustainable mulch material. They lay around plants, keeping soil moist, preventing weeds, and regulating soil temperature. In summer mulch keeps the ground cool; in winter it insulates.

Moreover, wood chips break down slowly and enrich soil with organic matter. As they decay, they add humus. This happens gradually, so you need not replace everything yearly.

A layer of wood chips 8 cm deep can reduce weed growth by up to 80 percent. That saves hours of work per season.

What are wood chips?

Wood chips are shredded bark and wood from tree and shrub pruning work. They come from branches, trunks, and broken wood. Not the same as wood fiber or garden compost. Wood chips are coarser and break down slower.

There are different types. Coarse wood chips (from larger pieces) stay intact longer. Fine wood chips break down faster. Some gardens prefer coarse; vegetable gardens finer.

Is wood chips safe for my plants?

Yes, but with care. Wood chips withdraw nitrogen from the soil as they break down. This is normal (called "nitrogen balance"). You compensate by adding some compost or nitrogen fertilizer yearly. Otherwise plants may turn yellow.

Also: wood chips against wood (your house, wooden bench) attract insects. Ensure mulch does not touch wood. Always leave 10-15 cm space between mulch and eaves, fences, or trees.

Where do you get wood chips?

Cheap: ask your local garden service, tree nursery, or municipality. Many municipalities dump their pruning waste free. Tree care companies often have surplus.

Online: sites like classified ads sometimes have bags for 5-15 euros.

Expensive: garden centers (often packed in bags, less economical per volume).

For large gardens many gardeners buy a full truck (minimum 10 cubic meters for roughly 100 euros). Share with neighbors and it becomes very affordable.

How old should wood chips be?

This is crucial. Very fresh wood (just cut) needs much nitrogen and sometimes draws heat (fermentation). Wait at least 2-3 months after cutting before using it. Best: use last year's wood chips.

Wood chips left for at least a season are "safe" and cause no problems anymore. Most free wood chips from municipalities are old enough.

Fresh chips? Mix them with compost or give your garden extra nitrogen (blood meal, horse manure).

How much should you use?

5-10 cm is the standard layer. Not thicker - that creates warmth where seeds germinate, and it becomes too wet.

For a border 10 meters long and 1.5 meters wide you need roughly 0.75 cubic meters (750 liters). With a shovel (roughly 5 liters per scoop) that is 150 scoops.

Not too thin: less than 3-5 cm does not help against weeds.

Step-by-step

Step 1: Clear your ground

Remove as much existing weed as possible. You need not be perfect, but large weeds must go. Chips cover, they do not kill.

Step 2: Apply wood chips

Lay 5-10 cm of wood chips around plants. Ensure material sits, not against stems or trees. Leave at least 10-15 cm clear space around tree trunks and woody plants.

Step 3: Add nutrition

Spread a thin layer of compost or nitrogen fertilizer before your mulch. This compensates for the nitrogen balance of decaying wood. Not needed if your chips are very old.

Step 4: Maintain

Check each season. Wood chips settle and disappear. Add 2-3 cm yearly in spring. Remove any remaining weeds under the mulch (they grow anyway).

Frequently asked questions

Will wood chips attract root diseases?

No, but it works the other way: if you already have root disease, mulch keeps them moister and they may grow faster. Mulch does not mask the issue. Fix the problem first (improve drainage) and then mulch.

Can I use wood chips in vegetable gardens?

Yes, but carefully. Wood chips withdraw nitrogen, so vegetables want extra feeding. Many vegetable gardeners prefer compost or straw. Wood chips work better around trees and shrubs in productive gardens.

What if wood chips develop rot?

Wood chips are consumed by microorganisms (not "rot" in the sense of plant fungus). This is healthy. If you see wood turn black or smell sour, it is normal - it breaks down.

True plant rot (such as botrytis) is different and does not come from wood chips. It arises from excess moisture around leaves.

Should I remove mulch for winter?

No, it can stay year-round. In winter it even helps as insulation. Leave it - it breaks down and improves your soil.

Expansion: other mulch types

Not only wood chips. Straw (for vegetable gardens), leaves (free from your own trees), compost (best for vegetables), gravel (for dry plants), or paper (under chips against weeds). Mix them to your garden.

For bird gardens you better avoid mulch around seed plants (they need bare sight). For shrubs and trees: wood chips wins.
