Vallisneria (Vallisneria spiralis), also known as spiral vallisneria or straight vallisneria, is a popular aquatic plant from the Hydrocharitaceae family. This elegant water plant is probably the most-used background plant in aquaria worldwide. The plant grows underwater and forms long, narrow, spiral-shaped green leaves that are pleasant to view and produce abundant oxygen.
The foliage of vallisneria is long, narrow and features a distinctive spiral pattern as it grows. The leaves can reach 20-60 cm in length and have fine teeth along the margins. The leaves grow in bundles from the roots and can be planted densely to create a wall-like effect. This structure makes vallisneria very suitable as background planting in aquaria.
The root structure of vallisneria is also important. The plant has rhizomatous roots that develop on the aquarium substrate. From these roots, persistent new shoots and stolons emerge and spread across the substrate. This makes vallisneria very invasive in aquaria, which can be both advantageous and challenging.
For optimal growth, vallisneria needs well-lit aquatic environments with moderate nutrient content. The plant thrives best at pH values of 7 to 7.5. Warm water temperatures of 20-28 degrees Celsius are ideal. The plant can tolerate soft to hard water.
Soil preparation for vallisneria must contain nutrient-rich substrate. Aquarium substrate with organic bedding works well. Nutrient-rich substrates can promote better growth. CO2 supplementation can enhance growth in densely planted aquaria.
Watering does not apply to vallisneria since it lives completely in water. However, water quality is essential. The plant thrives better in clean, clear water. Regular water changes help maintain water quality.
The maintenance calendar is simple. The plant grows rapidly and must be regularly thinned to prevent overgrowth. Wilted leaves can be removed. In aquaria, the plant can become very invasive and needs regular trimming.
Winter hardiness is not relevant since vallisneria is completely aquatic. The plant thrives best in warm environments.
Companion plants for vallisneria include other aquatic plants. Well-matching plants are Echinodorus species, Anubias, Java ferns and various moss species.
