Zigzag clover (Trifolium medium L.) is a robust perennial from the legume family, distinguished by its flexible, characteristically zigzagging flower stems and beautiful purple flower heads. This plant is naturally distributed throughout Europe to Siberia and Iran and is of great importance in forest areas and forage meadows.

Zigzag clover reaches heights of 30 to 80 centimeters and grows upright with characteristically zigzagging stems when young. The leaves are trifoliate and relatively large. Flowers appear from May through September in loose to semi-dense, purple flower heads with approximately 100-200 florets per head. The characteristic zigzagging of flower stems is distinctive.

This herb grows best in partially shaded locations in forests or beneath trees. The plant tolerates full sun but thrives less than in partial shade. Zigzag clover thrives on diverse soil types from sand to clay but prefers neutral to slightly acidic and moist conditions.

The plant tolerates moderately moist soils well but is also reasonably drought-tolerant. Regular moisture provision, however, promotes more vigorous growth. Zigzag clover is extremely frost hardy and persists as a perennial in most European climates. The plant survives winters down to approximately -20 degrees Celsius.

Zigzag clover can be propagated both from seed and from root cuttings. Sowing seed in early spring or autumn on prepared seedbed produces best results. Seeds germinate after stratification by overwintering. This makes autumn sowing often preferable.

Companion plants include other forest edge herbs such as wood clover, herb Paris, and greater plantain. These combinations form authentic forest edge ecosystems. Zigzag clover also grows well alongside grasses in semi-permanent meadows.

Maintenance during the growing season is mainly limited to regular moisture management during dry periods. Support is rarely needed. Removing spent flower heads promotes continued blooming, although this is optional.

Frost hardiness is excellent, so zigzag clover survives all winters in temperate European climates. The plant regrows from underground roots after attacks by frost, grazing, or disease.

Using zigzag clover in forest areas and semi-wild gardens offers many advantages. As a legume, the plant fixes nitrogen in soil, promoting soil conservation. The plant is also valuable for ecological forest edge hedges.

Forage use of zigzag clover is likewise valuable. The plant provides valuable nutrition for horses and sheep throughout the growing season. The high protein and mineral content makes it ideal for forage farming.

Seed availability is good in trade. Dutch suppliers including Intratuin and Gamma offer seed. German retailers such as OBI and Hornbach sell seed from April through October. For professional forage plans, consult gardenworld.app/nl and gardenworld.app/en.
