Overview

Senna alexandrina, also known as Egyptian senna or cassia, is a heat-loving shrub from North Africa and the Middle East that thrives in warm climates. The plant grows 1-2 meters tall and produces beautiful yellow flowers in summer-autumn. This is both a medicinal and ornamental plant, famous for its laxative leaves and stunning flower display.

Appearance and Bloom Time

The plant forms a broad, leafy canopy with fine, feathery leaflets that hang elegantly downward. From July to October, numerous yellow flowers appear in attractive clusters. The flower production is abundant and long-lasting. After blooming, small, flat seed pods follow which look decorative.

Ideal Location

Senna alexandrina is a true sun lover. This plant grows best in very sunny, sheltered spots. Ideal in courtyards, against heat-reflecting walls or in containers that can be moved. Protection from cold winds is important for winter survival.

Soil

This plant thrives in normal, well-draining garden soil. Heavy, wet soil is unsuitable. Add organic material at planting (compost). Prefers slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0-7.0). In containers: good drainage hole essential.

Watering

Regular watering during growing season, especially in hot periods. Ensure water drains freely. Avoid soggy conditions. In winter, give less water. Container specimens require more regular watering. Notice wilting quickly during drought.

Pruning and Maintenance

In spring, light pruning to maintain compact shape. Spent flowers can be pinched off. Remove dead branches. Carefully prune old plant material. Overly aggressive pruning can limit flowering.

Maintenance Calendar

Spring: Prune and fertilize with slow-release fertilizer. Summer: Regular watering and check for pests. Fall: Still blooming abundantly, maintain watering. Winter: Reduce water, provide protection in cold regions.

Winter Hardiness

Senna alexandrina is not winter-hardy in cold climates (zone 10). In temperate Europe, this plant requires container cultivation or protection against sheltered walls. Frost damage possible from -5oC. In containers, can overwinter indoors in bright location.

Companion Plants

In warm climates, beautiful with other Sahel plants: Bauhinia, Cassia fistula, Acacia. Also striking with heat-loving flowering plants. Avoid vigorous growers that would overshadow the delicate canopy. In gardens: pair with Mediterranean plants.

Closing

Senna alexandrina is a special plant for those with warmer locations. Where other plants give up, this senna blooms faithfully with yellow flowers. Valuable both medicinal (leaves) and ornamental. Plant in containers for flexibility. Consult local growers for availability.
