Overview

Saxifraga hostii, also known as the South-Alpine saxifrage, is a robust alpine plant naturally found in the eastern Alps. This is a classic rock plant with elegant yellow flowers and grey-green velvety foliage forming neat rosettes. The plant reaches 25-30 cm height and is perfect for rock gardens, alpine troughs and dry alpine landscapes.

Appearance and Bloom Time

The plant grows in compact grey-green rosettes with fine, lightly hairy leaves. From May to July, elegant stems with yellow star-shaped flowers emerge from the rosettes. The flowering period is long and very decorative. The foliage remains interesting throughout the year, even in winter.

Ideal Location

Saxifraga hostii grows best in sunny to partially shaded locations. Unlike many alpines, this plant tolerates full sun well. It also works in semi-shaded spots with protection from afternoon heat. Ensure good water drainage.

Soil

Use well-draining, coarse soil without clay. Ideal is a mixture of 60 pct coarse sand/gravel and 40 pct alpine potting soil. The plant thrives in neutral to slightly acidic soil (pH 6.0-7.0). Heavy, wet soil is absolutely unsuitable.

Watering

Saxifraga hostii is drought-tolerant but appreciates regular moisture during the growing season. Water must drain freely. The plant tolerates summer dryness well. In winter, give minimal water. Tip: never water directly on rosettes, always water at the base.

Pruning and Maintenance

This plant practically requires no pruning. After flowering, spent flower stems can be removed. In spring, remove dead leaves. The plant forms its own compact shape without intervention. Be careful: excessive handling damages the rosettes.

Maintenance Calendar

Spring (April-May): Check for dryness, water when soil feels dry. Summer (June-July): Water regularly, enjoy the flowers. Fall (September): Gradually reduce watering. Winter: Keep almost dry, no feeding.

Winter Hardiness

Saxifraga hostii is winter-hardy to -25oC (zone 4). The plant easily survives cold winters. Ensure good drainage to prevent frost damage. In regions with heavy wet winters, protective stones around the plant help prevent erosion.

Companion Plants

Perfect companions are other Saxifraga species, Sempervivum, Phlox subulata and Dianthus. Low-growing plants like Armeria maritima and Silene also fit excellently. Avoid large shrubs that would overgrow the plant.

Closing

Saxifraga hostii deserves more attention from garden enthusiasts. This robust alpine saxifrage offers years of ornamental value with yellow flowers and decorative foliage. Ideal for the rock gardener seeking something different from common varieties. Available at major garden retailers.
