Overview
Medicago hybrida, also known as Hybrid Alfalfa or Pourret's Medick, is a charming legume from the Pyrenees and southern France. This flowering plant reaches 30 to 50 centimeters in height and produces small yellow flowers arranged in compact clusters. The plant blooms from May to July and carries significant biological nutritional value. It is ideal for rustic gardens, dry grasslands and herb gardens where it enriches the soil with nitrogen.
Appearance and bloom
The plant forms an upright, finely branched growth habit with trifoliate leaves typical of alfalfa species. The leaflets are narrow and light green, giving the plant an elegant appearance. The flowers are small, about 0.5 centimeters in diameter, bright yellow and arranged in dense flower clusters. They appear from May to July and are important for honey bees and wild pollinators. After blooming, characteristic spiral-shaped seed pods develop that contain seeds. The entire plant has a soft, elegant appearance.
Ideal location
This plant loves sunny, open spots with good light. Plant it in full sun for optimal flowering and growth. It thrives in dry locations, steep slopes, and unfertilized mountain spots. Suitable for rustic gardens, mixed borders and wild planting schemes. Avoid shady spots as growth becomes sparse. The plant tolerates windy locations well. Plant in groups for better visual effect.
Soil
The soil must be well-draining but doesn't need to be rich. Weak, poor, calcareous soils are well tolerated. Light sandy or stony soil is ideal. Add sand if your soil is too heavy. Rich compost is not needed as the plant does well in poor soil. Because it is a legume, it adds nitrogen to the soil. The plant does much better on unfertilized soils. Maximum drainage is essential. A pH level between 7.0 and 8.0 is optimal.
Watering
Water very sparingly. Once established, the plant tolerates considerable drought. Water only if the top soil layer has dried out. Too much water causes disease. During very dry periods, regular watering helps flowering. After establishment in normal seasons, almost no water needed except in extreme drought. Avoid permanent waterlogging. Winter rain is usually sufficient. Drip irrigation is better than overhead spraying.
Pruning
Minimal maintenance pruning needed. Remove dead or damaged leaves for health. After flowering, spent flower clusters can be removed for neater appearance, but this is optional. Hard cutting back is not recommended as it slows plant recovery. Light deadheading after blooming can extend the blooming period. Maintain natural growth forms. Avoid aggressive pruning unless plant becomes wild.
Maintenance calendar
May-June: Follow flowering, remove damaged parts. July-August: After blooming let seed ripen or remove seed for re-bloom. September-October: Clean plant debris, prepare for winter. November-April: Winter rest, minimal activity, seed can be sown directly.
Winter hardiness
Medicago hybrida is hardy to zone 5 (-20 degrees Celsius) in favorable conditions. In much of Northwest Europe it can overwinter, although severe winters can cause damage. In very cold areas, choose protected spots against north. The plant behaves as a short-lived perennial or annual in very harsh climates. Self-seeding does well; let seed ripen and fall for next season. In milder regions the plant can last for years.
Companion plants
Grows naturally with other drought-tolerant legumes in mountain meadows. Combine in gardens with lavender species, santolina, sage and salvias. Yellow flowers combine nicely with blue flowers such as veronicas or echinops. Suitable for underplanting of rocks or naturally built stone gardens. Plant in groups of 3-5 in borders. Avoid wet soils and very rich earth.
Closing
Hybrid Alfalfa adds light yellow to dry, unfertilized gardens and is easy to grow. Nitrogen-fixing ability helps soil health. Flowers attract pollen and honey bees.
