Overview

Lobelia erinus, commonly known as garden lobelia or edging lobelia, is an extremely popular annual flowering plant from tropical and Southern Africa. Despite its tropical origins, this plant thrives as an annual in temperate climates. Lobelia erinus is renowned for its abundance of small, delicate flowers that appear in brilliant shades of blue, purple, red, pink, and white. The plant naturally grows in a spreading or trailing form, making it ideally suited for hanging baskets, terracotta pots, window boxes, and as groundcover in borders. Combined with other summer annuals, garden lobelia creates spectacular colour schemes that remain attractive throughout the entire summer.

Appearance and blooming

Lobelia erinus reaches a height of 10 to 20 centimetres with a spread of up to 30 centimetres, depending on variety. There are compact forms for containers and trailing varieties for hanging baskets. The leaves are small, lance-shaped and dark green. The flowers are particularly small, approximately 8 to 10 millimetres in diameter, but appear in incredible quantities on slender stems. A well-fed plant can have hundreds of flowers simultaneously. Bloom begins in May or June and extends until the first frost in October, thus a full 20 to 24 weeks of blooming. The flowers are particularly attractive to bees and butterflies. Popular varieties include 'Cambridge Blue', 'Kathleen Mallard', 'Mrs Clibran', and 'Riviera Marina'.

Ideal location

Lobelia erinus grows best in full sun locations with a minimum of 6 hours direct sunlight daily. In very hot regions, light afternoon shade is beneficial. It also grows well in partial shade, although this results in fewer flowers. The plant tolerates wind moderately, so protect it in very windy locations. A wind-sheltered spot facing south or west is ideal. For balcony containers, a location where the plant receives morning sun is excellent.

Soil

Lobelia erinus is very flexible regarding soil composition. A well-draining, nutrient-rich potting mix is ideal. Add compost or leaf mould to heavy garden soil, approximately 30 percent by volume. The plant also grows in poorer soil, provided drainage is ensured. A pH of 5.5 to 7.0 is ideal. For hanging baskets and containers, use specialist hanging plant compost already enriched with nutrients. Ensure water drains easily; standing water causes root rot.

Watering

Lobelia erinus is water-loving and must not dry out. Water the plant regularly, even daily during very warm periods. For baskets and containers in sun, you may need to water twice daily. The top 1 to 2 centimetres of soil must never completely dry. Always water at plant base, not over foliage, to prevent fungal disease. During rainy periods, water less frequently. With drip irrigation, provide approximately 1 to 2 centimetres water weekly. Daily moisture inspection is important.

Pruning

Lobelia erinus requires minimal pruning. Pinch out the tops of young plants when they reach 5 centimetres height to stimulate branching. This results in more flowers. Remove browned or diseased foliage as soon as you notice it. When the plant blooms less in July or August, you can cut back the entire crown by approximately 5 centimetres; this stimulates a second blooming period in autumn. Dead flowers need not be individually pruned; the plant naturally sheds these.

Maintenance calendar

In April, sow seed in warm, moist conditions. May is the time for sowing in full ground or placing grown seedlings. June offers watering and first feeding preparation. July and August are the hottest months; extra watering is essential. In September, provide second pruning if desired. October sees bloom decline with cold temperatures. November and December mark season end for annuals.

Winter hardiness

Lobelia erinus is not winter-hardy and must be replaced yearly. Temperatures below 5 degrees Celsius severely damage the plant. Frost is fatal. This is not a plant for permanent outdoor planting; it is exclusively suitable as summer bedding. After the first night frost, the plant will be completely destroyed.

Companion plants

Lobelia erinus forms beautiful combinations with other summer annuals. White and red begonias offer contrasting colours and texture. Calibrachoa, petunias, surfinias, and diascias work fantastically alongside lobelia in the same containers. For a classic combination, mix blue-white lobelia with silver helichrysum and red begonia. In borders, plant lobelia beneath taller growing annuals such as begonias or fuchsias. Feverfew (Tanacetum) provides fresh yellow texture next to lobelia's blue. For more subtle schemes, combine different shades of lobelia with each other.
