Overview
Linum trigynum, also known as slender yellow flax or French flax, is a charming herb that produces delicate yellow flowers. This summer bloomer from the Linaceae family thrives in warm, sunny gardens throughout Europe. The plant originally comes from the Mediterranean region and extends to parts of Africa.
The plant is relatively long-lived but often behaves as an annual or biennial in temperate climates. The yellow flowers are a striking addition to summer gardens and attract many pollinators.
Appearance and bloom
Linum trigynum is a slender, upright herb that grows about 30-60 cm tall. The leaves are very fine, linear and green, giving the plant an airy character. The flowers are the highlight: sunny yellow, five-petaled, about 1-1.5 cm wide.
The bloom period begins in June and lasts until August in most climates. Each flower lasts only a few hours, but the plant continuously produces new flowers throughout the entire summer period. After flowering, small seed pods form that can be harvested for seed.
The entire plant has a delicate, almost ethereal appearance that is elegant in summer gardens.
Ideal location
Slender yellow flax loves full sun. Plant it in a location where it receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight. Without sufficient light, the plant will bloom less and grow slowly.
The plant is very heat-tolerant and drought-resistant. It tolerates full summer sun without problems. Light afternoon shade in very hot regions can be beneficial, but not essential.
Soil
This flax is not particular about soil as long as it is well-draining. Sandy to loamy soils are ideal. Heavy clay material should be improved by adding sand and gravel.
The plant is frugal and grows well in poor soils. Excessive feeding can actually be undesirable and lead to too much foliage growth at the expense of flowers. A neutral to slightly acidic pH is suitable.
Watering
Once established, Linum trigynum is quite drought-tolerant. Regular watering helps achieve better blooms, but once dry is not a problem. Water moderately during the growing season.
Do not water too much - this can cause root rot and weak growth. The soil may dry out between waterings. In very dry periods supplementary watering may be needed.
Pruning
The plant requires minimal pruning. Remove faded flowers to encourage more blooms. Pinch the top slightly if the plant becomes too leggy.
At the end of the season the entire plant can be removed, or if it is a biennial form, cut back to the base.
Maintenance calendar
March-April: Sow seed in place or pre-sow indoors.
May-June: Plant growing; regular watering.
June-August: Peak bloom period; deadhead faded flowers.
September-October: Seed formation; allow some flowers to make seed.
November-February: Winter dormancy; plant will die in temperate climates.
Winter hardiness
Linum trigynum is not winter-hardy in many temperate climates. The plant does not survive frost well and usually dies over the first winter. In mild climates (Southern Europe) it can persist as a winter annual.
In the Netherlands and Belgium the plant is a summer annual grower. Re-seed each year for next season's bloom.
Companion plants
Slender yellow flax combines beautifully with other Mediterranean summer bloomers. Try combining it with purple sage, red poppy, or orange calendula.
Its sunny yellow calls for contrast with blue flowers like veronica or delphinium. In abstract gardens it fits well in group plantings.
Closing
Linum trigynum is an easy-growing summer bloomer for sunny, dry gardens. With minimal maintenance needs and cheerful yellow flowers it provides hours of summer enjoyment. Although not winter-hardy, it is easy to grow from seed.
Sow seed directly in gardens in April-May, or for earlier blooms pre-sow indoors in March. Find seeds online or at garden centers. For garden ideas, visit gardenworld.app and gardenworld.app.
