Overview

Linum tenuifolium, known as fine-leaved flax, slender flax, or delicate flax, is an elegant alpine plant from Europe. This delicate plant is known for its fine, needle-like foliage and small bright red flowers. The plant forms dense, compact mats and is perfect for alpine gardens, rock gardens, and borders with well-draining soil.

Fine-leaved flax grows naturally in mountain regions of Europe to Iran. It is a hardy, low-maintenance herb very suitable for dry, sunny locations. With good drainage, this plant will last for decades.

Appearance & Bloom

Linum tenuifolium grows to approximately 20-30 centimeters tall and forms dense, compact, gray-green mats or tufts. The leaves are very fine, needle-shaped, and gray-green, providing much texture. The flowers are small, approximately 1 centimeter across, and bright red to crimson in color.

Flowering occurs from May to July, with peak bloom in June. Each plant can produce hundreds of tiny flowers, creating a spectacular effect. The flowers close in the evening. The bloom period lasts several weeks.

After blooming, small seed capsules form that can be decorative. The plant is deciduous, so in winter it becomes a low gray-green tuft.

Ideal Location

Fine-leaved flax grows best in full sun. At least 6-7 hours of direct sunlight daily is essential for optimal blooming. In shade, the plant grows but blooms much lighter. The plant loves open, windy locations.

Plant on raised beds or gravel beds where air circulation is good. The plant is ideal for rock gardens or containers.

Soil

Well-draining soil is absolutely essential. Heavy, moist soils will lead to plant death. A mixture of normal garden soil with large amounts of coarse sand, gravel, and fine grit works perfectly. Very poor, stony soils are perfect for this plant.

Lightly acidic to neutral pH is ideal. Do not add organic matter; this causes rot.

Watering

Watering must be minimal. After planting, keep lightly moist, but then give very little water. In dry periods, occasionally give water, but ensure soil dries between waterings. Excessive water is fatal to this plant.

In pots, plant in very draining soil such as cactus or alpine mix.

Pruning

Pruning is practically unnecessary. Remove flowers after they fade to maintain neat appearance. Remove seed capsules unless you want to save seeds. In spring, you can remove dead parts.

Maintenance Calendar

May-July: Bloom. Minimal maintenance, no water unless very dry. August-October: Seeds ripening. Plant dying back. November-April: Dormancy. Minimal maintenance.

Annually: In spring, you can spread seeds or cut back young plants for bloom.

Winter Hardiness

Linum tenuifolium is hardy to -15 to -20 degrees Celsius. In very wet winters with heavy snow, moist conditions can be problematic. In wet climates, mulching with gravel helps.

Companion Plants

Fine-leaved flax combines beautifully with other alpine and dry-ground plants. Think of sedums, alpine ericas, small dianthus, and alpine phlox. Light silvery-gray plants such as silene nicely interrupt the red flowers.

Avoid vigorous growers or plants requiring abundant water and nutrients.

Closing

Linum tenuifolium is a charming, low-maintenance herb for those with a dry, sunny garden section. The fine texture and bright red flowers have great impact in small space. The plant is affordable and available from alpine/rock garden specialists.
