Overview

Linum strictum, known as Stiff Flax or Upright Yellow Flax, is a compact, upright plant from the extensive Mediterranean region to Pakistan. This robust plant is an excellent choice for dry borders and Mediterranean gardens with its numerous yellow flowers and stiffly upright growth habit.

As the much lesser-known brother of Linum narbonense, Linum strictum offers a similar but more compact and vertical appearance. At 30 to 50 centimeters tall and with very full yellow blooming, this plant brings structure and warm color to any dry garden area.

Appearance and Bloom

Stiff Flax forms upright, slender stems with very fine leaves in a dense, compact pattern. The plant reaches 30 to 50 centimeters tall with a very upright, columnar form - totally different from the more airy Linum narbonense.

The flowers are small but very numerous, bright yellow, approximately 1 centimeter in diameter. Blooming lasts from May to July. Each flower opens for only one day, but with so many buds the plant is constantly covered in yellow flowers. The compact, upright growth habit makes this ideal for small gardens.

Ideal Location

Choose a completely sunny spot with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Stiff Flax behaves as a true full-sun plant. In partial shade it grows poorly and doesn't bloom well. The plant thrives in open borders and also does fine in pots.

Because of its compact growth habit, it's also suitable for small gardens, narrow borders, or even small groupings in rocks or rock gardens.

Soil

Stiff Flax is very indifferent to soil - actually, it grows best in lean, nutrient-poor soil. Heavy clay needs improvement with sand and gravel. The plant tolerates sand and even gravel without many problems.

Preference: pH neutral to slightly acidic (pH 6.0 to 7.5). Mix: 50% garden soil, 40% sand or gravel, 10% compost is ideal.

Watering

Once established, Stiff Flax is exceptionally drought-efficient. Water regularly only for the first two weeks after planting. Thereafter, minimal watering - actually rainfall usually suffices.

Better under-watered than over-watered - this plant loves dry. Excessive water leads to poor growth and disease. A well-established plant requires virtually no summer watering.

Pruning

Minimal pruning required. The plant naturally forms a compact shape without hard pruning. Remove only dead stems after frost. Deadheading (removing spent flowers) isn't needed - the plant grows beautifully on its own.

After blooming in July you can leave the plant completely alone - the seed heads are decorative and attract birds. Cut back completely in March.

Maintenance Calendar

May: Setting out young stock. June: No feeding needed. June to July: Water only during prolonged drought. August to March: No maintenance.

Winter Hardiness

Stiff Flax is winter-hardy to minus 15 degrees Celsius, which suffices for the Netherlands and Belgium. This is a true Mediterranean plant that in severe winters however dies back underground and naturally regrows in early spring. Very advantageous for winter-interest borders!

Companion Plants

Stiff Flax combines beautifully with other Mediterranean, drought-tolerant plants: Lavender, Santolina, Artemisia, and Sedums. The vertical form is perfect for contrast with more ball-shaped plants. The yellow flower combines very well with blue plants like Salvia and Nepeta.

In small gardens it's ideal as a structural element in the middle of narrow borders.

Conclusion

Stiff Flax is an underdog in Mediterranean gardens - much less known than Linum narbonense, but equally valuable. The compact, upright growth habit and full yellow bloom bring structure and warmth to dry gardens. With exceptional drought tolerance and minimal maintenance needs, this is a plant that practically grows itself.

Purchase young stock in May/June from local growers. Plant in full sun on sandy soil. No feeding needed, almost no watering. Enjoy yellow flowers from May to July and decorative seed heads in autumn/winter.
