Overview

Hairy hawkbit (Leontodon saxatilis), also called rock hawkbit, is a charming alpine perennial from the Asteraceae family. This hardy plant grows naturally on rocks and slopes throughout Europe and North Africa, from lowland heaths to alpine meadows. In gardens, it is valued for its compact growth, delicate yellow flowers, and extremely hardy nature. The plant is ideal for rock gardens, alpine troughs, and other dry locations where many plants struggle.

Appearance & Bloom Cycle

Hairy hawkbit forms very compact rosettes with fine, linear, sometimes toothed leaves 5-10 cm long. Leaves are usually covered with stiff hairs, giving the plant a grayish appearance. Thin, branched flowering stems reach 20-40 cm height bearing numerous tiny yellow flower heads only 1-1.5 cm diameter. Blooming begins in May and can continue into September in favorable conditions. At the end of blooming, seed heads form an interesting downy structure.

Ideal Location

Hairy hawkbit grows best in sunny to very sunny locations. The plant tolerates little shade and blooms best in full sun. South-facing exposure is actually preferred. At least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight is recommended. The plant is extremely wind-resistant.

Soil Requirements

This is the most critical factor for hairy hawkbit. The plant demands extremely well-drained, acidic soil. Sand, gravel, and pebbles are ideal. A pH of 5.0 to 7.0 is preferred. The plant grows well on nutrient-poor soils; in fact, it thrives better on poor ground than rich garden soils. Wet soils are completely unsuitable and will almost certainly lead to root rot.

Watering

Once established, hairy hawkbit is extremely drought-resistant, perhaps more so than most other garden plants. Water regularly during the first season until established. Afterwards, minimal watering, even in dry summers. One must be very careful regarding soil saturation and water stagnation.

Pruning & Support

Hairy hawkbit requires no pruning or support. The plant is very compact. Removing spent flowers might slightly extend blooming, though this is not essential. The plant can become leggy and decline from excessive watering or too-rich soil, so avoid these situations.

Maintenance Calendar

  • March-May: Soil preparation, planting or sowing
  • May-June: First blooms, minimal watering
  • June-September: Continuous blooming in sunny weather, no watering unless very dry
  • September-October: Seed formation, collect seeds for propagation
  • October-March: Winter dormancy, minimal care

Winter Hardiness

Hairy hawkbit is very hardy to USDA zone 4 (-30°C), possibly even zone 3. In northern Europe, Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, no winter protection is needed. The plant tolerates wet winters less well than dry ones.

Sowing & Planting

Sow seeds in autumn (October-November) outdoors or in cold frame. Seeds can also be sown in spring after refrigerator stratification. Sowing depth: very shallow, seed needs light. Spacing: 15-20 cm apart. Germination time: 2-3 weeks. Propagation also possible via root cuttings.

Companion Plants

Hairy hawkbit combines well with other alpine and rock plants such as alpine geraniums, alpine phlox, saxifrages, and other hardy alpine garden plants. Avoid companions preferring wet soil.

Seed Production & Propagation

The plant self-seeds in favorable conditions. Seed heads can be collected and dried. The plant naturally disperses seed in well-drained, gravelly soil.

Hairy hawkbit is a truly precious addition for alpine and rock garden enthusiasts. It provides years of yellow blooms in the most challenging locations. Gardenworld.app can help you design a beautiful alpine garden with this and similar plants.
