Overview

The Perennial veldt grass (Ehrharta calycina), also known as purple grass, is a versatile ornamental grass native to South Africa. This remarkable plant is known for its fine, light plumes that are grey-purple in color from summer to autumn. The grass grows elegantly to approximately 60-90 centimeters high and forms attractive mound-shaped groups. It is a popular choice for modern gardens, cut flowers and as support in mixed borders. Ehrharta calycina brings movement and texture to any garden design.

Appearance & bloom

This grass grows in elegant, open groups with slender stems carrying linear foliage. The plumes are fine and light, in shades of grey, purple and pink, depending on growing conditions and harvest time. The plumes appear from July to October and can be up to 40 centimeters long. The grass maintains its attractive form throughout the season and provides much visual interest when other flowering plants fade. The dried plumes remain ornamental well into winter.

Ideal location

Ehrharta calycina thrives best in sunny to semi-shady spots with at least six hours of direct sunlight. The plant loves warm situations and is ideal for sunny borders and dry slope gardens. It tolerates partial shade, although this can lead to less compact growth. In very shady spots, the plant may perform poorly. Ensure adequate air circulation to prevent fungal diseases.

Soil

This grass is undemanding and grows in virtually all soils, including lean, dry and sandy ones. It tolerates even poor drainage conditions better than many other ornamental grasses. For optimal growth, however, add well-structured soil with moderate fertility. Ehrharta calycina tolerates both neutral and slightly acidic soils. It plants well in sandy or gravelly soils with little organic matter.

Watering

Once established, the grass is relatively drought-tolerant. During the first growing period, water evenly until it is well rooted. Once established, the grass tolerates dry periods well, thanks to its deep root system. Excessive watering can be harmful and leads to loss of form. Water only during prolonged summer drought. In pots, the grass grows more compact and requires more regular watering.

Pruning

Heavy cutback of Ehrharta calycina in early spring stimulates new, more compact growth. Cut the grass back to approximately ten centimeters above ground level in March before new growth begins. Regularly remove dead leaves and damaged stems for a neater appearance. Leave the dried plumes well into winter for winter ornamentation. Preferably avoid heavy pruning during the growing season.

Maintenance calendar

January-March: Heavy cutback, cleanup of dead material. April-June: Encourage new growth, even watering. July-August: Enjoy plumes, moisture supply in extreme heat. September-October: Plumes fully emerged, avoid pruning. November-December: Cleanup of damage, winter preparation. Seasonal progression in the garden.

Winter hardiness

Ehrharta calycina is not fully winter hardy in Northern European climates and is susceptible to temperatures below freezing. In Southern Europe it may survive if the grass grows in warm, sheltered spots. In colder regions, many gardeners grow the grass in pots and bring it indoors or to sheltered locations in winter. The plant can also be treated as an annual grass. In very frost-sensitive regions, additional protective material is needed.

Companion plants

Ehrharta calycina combines beautifully with other warm-soil grasses and succulents, such as fine-textured lavenders, sages and artemisia. Also use it in modern borders with dark foliage or yellow leaf colors. For a naturalistic effect, plant it between dwarf conifers and rock plants. In pots, the grass works wonderfully as a filler, grouped in uneven numbers. Also combine with purple-flowering plants for dramatic color contrasts.

Closing

Ehrharta calycina brings elegant light and movement to any garden design thanks to its fine, ornamental plumes. Perfect for modern designs and cut flower arrangements.
