Overview

Fountain grass (Cenchrus setaceus), also known as Crimson Fountaingrass, is a spectacular ornamental grass from the Poaceae family, native to North Africa and the Middle East. This warm-season grass grows to 60-90 cm and produces silky, fountain-like flower panicles in red, pink, or golden-yellow. Highly popular in modern garden designs. In cold climates grown as an annual or overwintered indoors.

Appearance & Bloom

Fountain grass forms dense, waterfall-like clumps of narrow, upright foliage. The flower panicles are extremely decorative: long, silky setae (bristles) form dense, slightly drooping plumes. Color varies from pale yellow to deep crimson-red depending on variety. Blooming period: summer to autumn (July-October). Plant can reach 90 cm tall.

Ideal Location

Requires full sun and bright light for optimal appearance. Excels in warm, sheltered locations. Ideal for containers, borders, and focal points in grass combinations. Can be used for visual screening. Perfect for modern, Mediterranean, or xeriscape gardens. Indoors in pots for overwintering.

Soil

Grows in well-drained, sandy to loamy soil. pH preference: neutral to slightly acidic (6-7.5). Poor soils acceptable; over-richness causes floppy growth. Extremely drought-tolerant once established. Poor drainage is the biggest problem. Adding compost helps retention in very sandy soils.

Watering

Moderate water first season for establishment. Once established, extremely drought-tolerant. During growing period (summer) water regularly. In autumn and winter drastically reduce. As a potted plant: water when soil feels dry. Overwatering leads to root rot.

Pruning

Pruning not needed; plant naturally forms elegant shape. In spring, remove all dead foliage from last season for tidier appearance. Remove damaged material. Plant can be "cut back" for denser form. Seed panicles can be removed for neater look.

Maintenance Calendar

Spring: Remove dead material from last season, begin watering cycle. Summer: Water regularly, monitor for drought, enjoy flowering. Autumn: Reduce water as night temperatures fall. Winter: In cold climates, bring indoors or thickly mulch. Annually replace or overwinter.

Winter Hardiness

Not frost-hardy. Only hardy in warm zones 9-11. Plant dies at first frost. In temperate climates, treat as annual or grow in containers. Can be overwintered in cool, dry indoor location. Zone 8 and colder: replace annually.

Companion Plants

Combine with other warm-loving plants: Gaura, Salvia, Perovskia, other ornamental grasses. Larger structural plants add depth. In containers pair with Verbena, Calibrachoa, Senecio. Preference for similar water requirements.

Closing

Fountain grass transforms gardens with dramatic, exotic beauty. Perfect as a focal point and for modern designs. For advice on ornamental grasses and subtropical combinations, visit gardenworld.app/en or consult specialists for plant material.
