Overview

Bromus scoparius, commonly known as broom brome or broom grass, is a striking ornamental grass native to Mediterranean regions and adjacent zones of North Africa, Asia Minor, and Central Asia. This fine-textured grass reaches 30 to 60 centimeters in height with equal spread. The species is particularly prized for its elegant, lightweight seedheads that ripen from green to warm brown from July through winter. It ranks among the most drought-tolerant grasses, ideal for dry sunny garden locations.

Appearance and Bloom

Bromus scoparius forms dense, upright tufts of fine grass-like foliage. Leaves are narrow and linear, approximately 2 to 4 millimeters wide, gray-green in color. From May to July, graceful, nodding flower panicles (spikes) emerge, initially greenish, later ripening to warm brown tones. The seedheads are exceptionally elegant, displaying a broom-like appearance explaining the common name. These persist deep into winter providing movement and interest. Foliage sometimes tinges reddish-brown in autumn.

Ideal Location

Bromus scoparius thrives in completely sunny locations. This grass requires warm, dry conditions. Shelter from severe wind is helpful, though the plant is relatively wind-resistant. Ensure well-drained, non-waterlogged positions. Perfect for slopes, dry borders, and alpine troughs. Unsuitable for moist or shaded locations.

Soil

Bromus scoparius prefers well-drained, dry soil. The species tolerates poor soils well, thriving even in lean, sandy, or gravelly substrates. Acidic to neutral to alkaline pH all prove acceptable. The plant cannot tolerate waterlogged ground. Sandy-to-gritty mixtures prove ideal.

Watering

Once established, this grass proves extremely drought-tolerant requiring virtually no water. During the first growing season, water regularly until the grass establishes deep roots. Thereafter water only during extreme drought. Excessive water promotes fungal problems and decline.

Pruning

Bromus scoparius requires no pruning in the traditional sense. The plant may be cut back to just above ground level in late spring (April-May) before growth begins. This removes dead previous-year's material and stimulates fresh growth. Leave seedheads intact while attractive.

Maintenance Calendar

Spring (March-May): Cut back dead material in April before growth begins. Check drainage conditions.

Summer (June-August): Seedheads emerge and develop. Enjoy elegant structure throughout.

Autumn (September-October): Panicles darken and mature beautifully. Plant remains standing for winter interest.

Winter (November-February): Dead panicles on plant provide winter architectural interest.

Winter Hardiness

Bromus scoparius is reasonably hardy to approximately -15 degrees Celsius. In very cold climates, shelter helps. In many temperate zones it thrives perfectly. Not suitable for severe alpine conditions.

Companion Plants

Bromus scoparius combines well with:

  • Other drought-tolerant grasses (Stipa, Festuca, Koeleria)
  • Lavender (Lavandula)
  • Cistus (rock rose)
  • Teucrium (wall germander)
  • Thymus (thyme)
  • Sedum and succulents

Ensure all companions are drought-loving.

Final Thoughts

Bromus scoparius is an elegant ornamental grass for those with dry, sunny garden spaces. Its elegant brown seedheads, drought tolerance, and minimal care needs make it an ideal choice. Perfect for Mediterranean gardens, dry borders, and alpine troughs. This grass brings structure and movement to the garden landscape. Once established, it requires virtually no maintenance.
