Overview

Dwarf hedgehog aloe (Aloe humilis), also called 'hedgehog aloe', is a compact South African succulent from the Asphodelaceae family. This spider-like miniature forms dense rosettes of sturdy, warty leaves and blooms with yellow tubular flowers. Exceptional for container growing and xeriscaping.

Appearance and bloom

Dwarf hedgehog aloe forms rosettes with green to reddish foliage, only 15-30 cm tall. Leaves are tuberculated (covered with small bumps) with red-tipped points. Yellow flowers appear March-May as tubular blooms in clusters. Growth is slow, forming attractive clusters over time.

Ideal location

Optimal in full sun positions with 6+ hours direct sunlight. Suitable for windowsills, dry borders and container growing. Protect from afternoon sun in very hot climates. Ideal for office and home environments due to compact growth.

Soil

Use well-draining cactus/succulent soil. Add 50% sand, gravel or perlite for superior drainage. Heavy clay is deadly. Mineral mix works excellently (3 parts gravel, 1 part succulent soil). pH range: neutral to alkaline (6.5-8.0).

Watering

Water sparingly. During growing season (April-September) water only when soil is completely dry. Winter with light moisture (once monthly). Excess moisture causes root rot. Bottom watering ideal for potted plants.

Pruning

Minimal pruning needed. Remove dead leaves and flowers after blooming. Remove side shoots if maintaining single central rosette. Old flowers can be saved for seed collection.

Maintenance calendar

April-May: Blooming period, minimal water. June-September: Growing period, sparse water. October-March: Rest period, virtually no water. Yearly: Refresh sand/gravel in pots.

Winter hardiness

Hardy zones 10-11. Tolerates brief frost to -5C but must overwinter indoors in temperate climates. Keep above 10C.

Companion plants

Pair with other South African succulents: Haworthia, Gasteria, Echeveria, other Aloe species. Perfect in xeriscaping mixes with Sedum, Sempervivum and ornamental grasses.
