Plants for chalky soil: which grow well on alkaline ground?

TL;DR

Chalky soil (pH above 7.5) contains much calcium (chalk). Many plants struggle because iron is locked up. But plenty love it: lavender, rosemary, clematis, hornbeam, Judas tree, spiraea, sedum, dianthus. Avoid azalea, blueberry, rhododendron (chalk-haters). Add compost to buffer pH slightly.

How do you know you have chalky soil?

• Soil test shows pH above 7.5
• Ground feels "white" or "yellowish" (chalk visible)
• Plants show yellow leaf with green veins (iron deficiency)
• Excavation in building site shows white/grey chalk
• Old gardens on chalk terrain (southern UK, northern France)

Why is chalky soil tricky?

Calcium binds iron, magnesium, zinc. Though present, plant roots cannot absorb them. Result: chlorosis (iron deficiency). Plants yellow, weak growth.

Some plants REQUIRE low pH (azalea, blueberry, heather): on chalk they fail outright. Literally screaming "I cannot do this."

But many others are "calcicoles" (chalk-lovers). They thrive with calcium.

Flowers that love chalk

Many flowers prefer lightly alkaline (pH 7.5-8.5):

• Lavender: Adores chalk. Dry, blue, fragrant.
• Rosemary: Mediterranean, chalk-hearty.
• Clematis: Many types love chalk (especially large-flowered).

What to avoid on chalky soil?

Some famous "chalk-haters":

• Azalea: HATES chalk. Will not grow. Painful to watch.
• Rhododendron: Also chalk-hater. Many types impossible.
• Blueberry: Wants acid soil (pH 5-6). Chalk: zero chance.
• Heather (Erica, Calluna): Acid-lover, not here.
• Pieris: Japanese plant, acid-sick, not on chalk.
• Gardenia: Tropical, iron-starved, hopeless.
• Hydrangea: Many types want acid. Blue turns pink on chalk.

You cannot force these. Better: choose what DOES love chalk.

Step-by-step

Step 1: Test your pH

Soil test (see other article) shows your pH. Above 7.5? Chalky. Above 8.5? Very chalky. Between 7.0-7.5? Neutral, wider choice.

Step 2: Make selection

Choose from "chalk-lovers":

• 1-2 large trees (Tilia, Hornbeam, Judas)
• 3-4 shrubs (Spiraea, Philadelphus, Viburnum)
• 5-10 ground covers/low (Sedum, Cistus, Achillea)
• Herbs (Lavender, Rosemary, Thyme)

Step 3: Buffer with compost

Add 2-3 cm compost yearly over your bed. Supplies organic matter and slightly acidifies. pH drifts from 8.5 to 8.0 over years. Helps iron uptake.

Step 4: Plant in spring

Plant March-April (or October-November in mild climates). Water extra first season. Many chalk-lovers are drought-tolerant, but young they want water.

Step 5: Mulch

Mulch around plant (5-10 cm) with leaf mould, wood chips, or compost. Helps moisture AND slightly acidifies. Win-win.

FAQ

Can I make my soil less chalky?

Hard. Chalk is easy to leach with huge water, but costs millions of litres. Better: add compost (buffers slightly, works over years) and avoid acid-lovers.

Seriously: remove top layer to better soil (expensive) or accept chalk-ground as a feature.

What is iron chelate?

Iron chelate is iron in form plants can absorb DESPITE high pH. You can spray on leaf (foliar) or mix into soil. Helps chlorosis temporarily. Not long-term solution.

Can I grow blueberry anyway?

Theoretically: add very acid mulch (acid bark, conifer needles), buffer pH. Practically: much work, less yield. Better: choose fruit that LOVES chalk (berry, raspberry, blackberry much more robust).

What if I want azaleas?

Not on chalk. Or you build a "pocket" (box with acid soil, 60 cm deep and wide, buried). Expensive, labour, and azalea cannot root much deeper. Not really handy.

Better: accept your ground and choose Spiraea, Philadelphus, Ceanothus (equally pretty, better fitted).

Why do my hydrangeas turn pink/red?

On chalky soil (pH above 7.5) hydrangeas take up calcium, which they use to make anthocyanins (pink/red pigment). Blue hydrangeas on acid soil. Pink/red on alkaline. You can shift colours by adjusting pH (spray acid = blue; chalk = pink). Handy!

Which garden plants are "neutral" (grow anywhere)?

Much "standard" planting:

• Rose (most types), clematis, privet, hornbeam,
• Grass, herb mixes, many vegetables
• Popular flowers (daffodils, tulips, sedum)
