Tamarix ramosissima
Tamarisk is an elegant, large shrub with fine, needle-like leaves that cast a blue-green haze over the plant. From June to September, feathery pink flower plumes appear, giving the plant an ethereal, dreamy look. Tamarisk is exceptionally wind- and salt-tolerant, making it a beloved coastal plant.
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil. Tamarisk is undemanding about soil type and tolerates both poor sandy ground and chalky soils. The plant is very drought-resistant and needs barely any water once established. Prefers an open, breezy position.
Prune in early spring by cutting the shrub back by a third — the plant flowers on new wood. Old, overgrown specimens can be cut back to 30 centimetres. Tamarisk regrows rapidly.
Hippophae rhamnoides
Sea Buckthorn is a robust, thorny shrub with narrow, silver-green leaves that lend a distinctive coastal look. In autumn, female plants produce striking orange berries rich in vitamin C that birds love. The plant is exceptionally wind-resistant and tolerates salt spray.
Lavandula angustifolia
Lavender is a beloved herb with aromatic silver-green foliage and purple-blue flower spikes. This evergreen plant blooms profusely from June to August and is remarkably drought-tolerant, attracting butterflies and bees to the garden.
Buddleja davidii
Butterfly Bush is the ultimate butterfly magnet with long, fragrant flower spikes in purple, pink or white from July to September. The shrub grows quickly and flowers abundantly, even in poor soil. On every warm summer day, dozens of butterflies flock to the honey-sweet blooms.
