Malus domestica
The apple tree is a classic fruit tree that becomes covered in pink-white blossom in April and May — an irresistible spectacle for people and pollinators alike. In autumn, apples follow, ripening early or late depending on the variety. An apple tree in the garden offers blossom, fruit, shade, and habitat for countless creatures.
Plant in full sun in moist, fertile soil with good drainage. Choose a spot sheltered from late frosts that can damage blossom. Water young trees regularly. Feed in spring with a balanced garden fertiliser. Ensure cross-pollination with multiple varieties or a nearby apple tree.
Prune in winter (December-February) by removing crossing, diseased, and inward-growing branches. Keep the centre of the crown open for light and air circulation. Remove water shoots in summer. Give young trees formative pruning in the first years for strong crown structure.
Lavandula angustifolia
Lavender is a beloved herb with aromatic silver-green foliage and purple-blue flower spikes. This evergreen plant blooms profusely from June to August and is remarkably drought-tolerant, attracting butterflies and bees to the garden.
Alchemilla mollis
Lady's Mantle is a reliable perennial treasured for its beautiful, scalloped leaves that catch dewdrops like tiny pearls. From June to July, clouds of delicate yellow-green flowers appear, making excellent cut flowers. The plant forms attractive, rounded clumps and works beautifully as edging.
Nepeta × faassenii
Catmint is a tough border plant with grey-green, aromatic foliage and soft blue flower plumes. It blooms from May to September, making it one of the longest-flowering perennials. Bees love the flowers and cats are drawn to the leaves.
