Elaeagnus × ebbingei
Ebbinge's Silverberry is a fast-growing, evergreen shrub with leathery, silver-green leaves that are brilliantly silver on the underside. In October and November, small, creamy-white, wonderfully fragrant flowers appear. The plant is remarkably versatile: excellent as a hedge, windbreak, or specimen. Tolerates sea wind and urban conditions.
Plant in sun or partial shade in virtually any soil type. Silverberry is exceptionally tolerant and thrives even in poor, dry, or salty soils. Once established, very little watering is needed. The plant grows rapidly — up to 60 centimetres per year.
Prune in late spring or after flowering to maintain desired shape and size. The plant tolerates hard pruning extremely well and regrows quickly. For hedges, prune twice a year: spring and late summer.
Photinia x fraseri
Red Robin is a popular evergreen hedging plant that dazzles in spring with bright red young foliage. White flower clusters appear in April and May, followed by small red berries. The plant grows quickly and forms a dense, opaque hedge.
Buxus sempervirens
Boxwood is an evergreen shrub with small, glossy dark green leaves that is ideal for topiary and hedging. The plant grows slowly and can live for hundreds of years. Small green-yellow flowers appear in April and May, attracting early bees.
Ilex aquifolium
English Holly is a stately, evergreen tree with glossy, spiny dark green leaves that provide a magnificent backdrop in winter. Female specimens bear bright red berries that are indispensable winter food for birds. The tree grows slowly but can live for centuries.
