Crocosmia masoniorum
Giant Montbretia is a striking bulbous plant with arching flower stems laden with fiery orange, funnel-shaped blooms. The sword-shaped leaves form dense clumps and the flowering lasts from July to September. An excellent choice for warm colour schemes in summer borders.
Plant the corms in spring at 8-10 cm deep in full sun and well-drained soil. Water regularly during the growing season. In colder regions, mulch for winter protection. The corms gradually spread to form dense groups.
Remove spent flower stems but leave the foliage intact until it dies back in autumn — it feeds the corm for next year. Cut away yellowed leaves once brown. Divide overcrowded clumps every three to four years in spring.
Rudbeckia fulgida
Black-eyed Susan blooms from July through October with radiant golden-yellow petals surrounding a dark brown center. The plant is virtually indestructible, spreads gradually, and suits large borders and prairie-style gardens. After flowering, the seed heads provide food for birds.
Kniphofia uvaria
Red Hot Poker is a spectacular perennial with torch-shaped flower clusters in fiery shades of red, orange and yellow. The blooms appear from June to September on sturdy stems above grass-like foliage. The plant is a magnet for hummingbirds, bees and butterflies.
Miscanthus sinensis
Chinese Silver Grass is a striking ornamental grass that adds structure to any garden with its tall plumes and gracefully arching leaves. Silvery-white plumes appear from August to October and catch the autumn and winter light beautifully. The dried grass remains attractive throughout winter.
