Overview
Schkuhria pinnata, also known as Curious-weed or Dwarf Marigold, is a compact annual herb from the Asteraceae family, native to tropical America. This delicate plant grows wild from Arizona to Argentina.
Curious-weed is a popular choice for flower borders and containers. With its small yellow flowers and fine, feathery foliage, it brings lightness and elegance to gardens. It self-seeds easily.
Appearance & Bloom
Curious-weed grows as a compact, bushy herb between 30-60 cm tall. The foliage is very finely cut, feathery-pinnate, dark green, creating light, elegant form even when not blooming.
Flowers appear from July through October. They are tiny, bright-yellow button-like flowers in dense clusters. Each flower measures just millimeters but together they form impressive yellow displays.
The plant offers months of continuous bloom. Spent flowers are replaced by seeds, which stimulates the plant to produce more flowers.
Ideal Location
Curious-weed thrives best in full sun. Provide at least 6 hours direct sunlight daily. The plant also grows in light shade but blooms less abundantly.
The plant prefers warm locations. Although frost-resistant to about -5 degrees Celsius (until first frost), it grows much better in warm season.
Ensure good air circulation around the plant for health.
Soil
Well-draining, gritty or sandy garden soil is ideal. The plant tolerates poor soils and actually grows better in less fertile earth. Heavier clay soils should be improved with sand and grit.
PH between 5.5 and 7.5 is suitable. Add a small amount of compost at planting but do not overdo it.
Excessively fertile soils result in too much foliage and less bloom.
Watering
Watering is important during the growing period. Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Once established, the plant tolerates dry periods.
Summer dry weather requires normal watering. Excessive watering leads to fungal problems. Let soil slightly dry between waterings.
Watering at the base is better than overhead spraying.
Pruning
Light pinching off of spent flower clusters helps continuous bloom. Remove dead flowers weekly for maximum flower production.
If the plant becomes leggy, you can trim it back to encourage bushier growth.
Remove yellowed or diseased leaves when noticed.
Maintenance Calendar
May-June: Start seed indoors or direct sow outdoors after last frost. July-August: Full growth, water regularly, thin weak plants. September-October: Peak blooming period, continuous flowers, minimal maintenance. November: Frost period, plant dies off in cold, seed falls.
Winter Hardiness
Schkuhria pinnata is an annual that does not survive frost. In mild-winter climates seed can self-sow for next year despite the plant's death.
Let some flowers set seed and fall to ground for natural self-seeding next year.
Companion Plants
Other yellow asteraceae are calendula, rudbeckia, heliopsis and zinnia. For fine texture, ammi and foeniculum are interesting.
Closing
Schkuhria pinnata is an easy-to-grow, reliable self-seeder that provides season-long flower color. With minimal maintenance it delivers what it promises - it is curious-weed.
Seed is available at garden centers and online. Go for mature plants if you want flowers immediately this season.
