Overview

Peucedanum oreoselinum, commonly known as Mountain-parsley or Alpine Parsnip, is an elegant perennial herb from the Apiaceae family naturally occurring throughout Europe. This hardy, long-lived plant grows naturally on mountainsides and dry grasslands. With its finely dissected, feathery foliage and delicate white flower clusters, it makes an elegant addition to alpine and naturalistic plantings.

Appearance and Bloom

Mountain-parsley forms a relatively compact plant reaching 40-60 cm in height. The leaves are finely cut and feathery, creating an exceptionally graceful appearance. Stems are stiff and upright, providing excellent structure. Flowers appear in July through September, arranged in small white umbels characteristic of the Apiaceae family. These flower clusters attract beneficial insects.

Ideal Location

This plant thrives in full sun and tolerates partial shade. Ensure well-drained soil. Mountain-parsley is ideal for dry locations, alpine gardens, rock gardens, and natural grassland plantings. The plant is robust once established and requires minimal care.

Soil

Peucedanum oreoselinum grows best in well-drained, moderately fertile soils. It tolerates dry, stony, or sandy soils excellently. It struggles in waterlogged or heavy clay soils. Preferred pH ranges from 5.5 to 7.0. Soil improvements are usually unnecessary except for very poor or compacted ground.

Watering

Once established, this plant is drought-tolerant. Regular watering during the first growing season encourages strong root development. In dry weather, additional watering is not needed for mature plants. Normal rainfall is sufficient.

Pruning

Pruning is not essential for Peucedanum oreoselinum. Deadheading spent flowers can limit excessive self-seeding. Allow the plant to decline naturally in autumn. Self-sown seeds may germinate the following spring.

Maintenance Calendar

Spring: Plant emerges from dormancy. No intensive feeding needed. Summer: Minimal maintenance required. No supplemental watering in normal rainfall. Fall: Seeds form and ripen. Allow natural decline. Winter: Dormancy period. Plant tolerates freezing temperatures well.

Winter Hardiness

Mountain-parsley is exceptionally winter-hardy in temperate climate zones. It tolerates frost and snow very well. Suitable for USDA zones 3-8, making it an excellent choice for northern gardens.

Companion Plants

Combine Mountain-parsley with other alpine plants like Sempervivum and Sedum. It works beautifully with drought-tolerant grasses. White flowers such as Dianthus create lovely combinations. Groundcovers can be planted beneath it.
